Canadian BD-5J makes first flight!
« on: November 18, 2003, 03:20:25 PM »
Friend of mine, Scott Manning, finished up his BD-5J (jet) recently and began the test flight portion.  He sent me an email and some pics/link...I suspect it took him a day for the smile to fade away!

Sweet! I'd hate to try landing that in a crosswind, tho.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Looks like a Me163.  Tell your friend to watch for P51s while landing.

J's have a good rep, fewer of them...most homebuilders dont have the resources to buy the jet engine, etc.

The single bigget killer of the recip BD-5's is an engine setup that is too heavy, poor cooling...and in many cases, inexperienced pilots.  Centerline thrust is much different than what you learn in C172s, etc

They are neat airplanes...I miss mine at times...but other kits entice me  :aok
