M-16 has always been a problem. I have no problem with the 5.56mm round but the weapon has to go. My vote would be to buy the licence and produce the Galil from Israel.

When it comes to war, Israel doesn't mess around. The Galil is based on the AK series with a few refinements. Its not pretty but it'll get the job done and is a much better weapon than M-16.

I was under the impression that for close quarter gunfights, you were best to use a pistol or a short submachine gun (uzi like?).

I wonder if it would be cheaper for the US army to just give every soldier a pistol instead of replacing the m16 with something else in the 'interim' when the new inf. rifle is to come out.

And that OICW gun in the pics above looks impressively bulky

My country uses the Galil as one of its 2 infantry issue rifles. It is too heavy and kicks like a mule. Not exactly an ideal weapon for today. If I remember correctly, the gov. had looked into buying britain's SA-80 as its replacement since most of the combat situations our guys faced were jungle/forest and urban warfare...which the galil did not perform very well in (which is why they issued the AR15 as well as the Galil).

Ive read about the SA-80... its an impressive little gun.

M4 brings the power of an assualt rifle to close quorters battle, while not quite so accurate or powerful.
submachineguns are weaker than carbines and has less range, also less penetration power (although that wouldnt matter too much against unarmoured 'terrorists' in iraq)
Pistol lacks automatic (those which doesnt, are horribly inaccurate on auto) and power, besides becoming quite inaccurate at range.

Then what comes to the close quorters, it can also mean short distances and not just some room to room fightning.
Submachinegun would be great indoors, but in Iraq you need the gun to be capable of fightning outside as well, where the ranges can get longer than SMG is capable of.
So you give the soldier an M4 carbine and they can use it indoors and outdoors in the most common combat situation in Iraq.

Another thing is that carbines uses same ammo as full lenght rifles.
So you can equip a squad with M16's and M4's, then they can distribute ammo like they want, since both guns accepts same ammo and magazines.

Personally, I'do go with FAMAS. Bull pup, reliable, three firing modes, proven in combat. Steyr AUG seems somewhat delicate and larger.

AKs are reliable, but actually depend on their lose tolerances. I've used Russian, Chinese, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Yugoslav AK variants. Yugoslav was definitely of the highest quality, but about half of kilogram heavier than others. Romanian was a POS. 5.45 mm versions were quite easier to control while firing and their ammo is very nasty. But so is 5.56.

Do an AK with higher tolerances and you get the Galil. Why Israelis are still using M16s is beyond me tho(?!). As for heavy rifle kicking like a mule, it is against physics . The heavier the rifle, the less it kicks generally.

As for US troops, there is the Tavor rifle IDF doesn't want to buy.

Was noticin in allot of the pic and vidieo's comin outa Iraq that many troops are carrying AK's.

Any one else see/notice this?

Some reports are that the military has been issuing lubricant that actually attracts the fine dust and jams the m16.  

I have always been attracted to the M14 myself.  But the AK is a great rifle.  Surplus SKS's are pretty accurate as well.

I had one of those as my personal weapon when I did the US armys Jungle warfare course(Sterling SMG) and in 2 seperate incedents in the month I was there US soldiers offered to buy it off me. They were sure I could just drop it in the Jungle and say I lost it.

I'm not saying the M16A2 is a great weapon or anything but these solier's NOCs and Officers should be beating it down there throats to CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN your weapons.  

Weapons cleaning should be a daily part of life for an infantryman in the field.  We had to do it at least twice a day and it sucks balls big time.  BUT, the weapons never jammed this way.  

Yes LPS, the standard cleaning soluition for the military, it does attract dust and gunk up in carbon.  That just goes towards my first statement of CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN.

I think the 16 needs to go away but these NCOs should know how to properly maintain it so it wont jamm.

kinda like vietnam, where are troops spent all day cleaning their guns while the dirty ak47s tore into them.
