Need urgent help with computer
« on: November 23, 2003, 01:30:45 PM »
I have a 2.4 Gig pentium 4 that's several months old and it's been running like a late model commodore 64 for the last few days. I've defragged, scanned for viruses, checked for errors in windows and C-drive, closed all applications and minimzed processes. System restore isn't working.

It's so slow that it takes a good 20 seconds just to open e-mails. Almost as long to launch MS word or to open existing Word docs.

Please help, if you can. I live on the 17th floor and I'm afraid this machine won't live through a defenestration.

Thanks in advance.

Anything change lately or did it just start happening?

Since you mention sys restore one can assume you're using xp...  What processes are running in the background?

The machine has three fans and they all seem to be working. It's a very well ventilated case(was selected for that reason). I am using XP, and System restore attempts to restore, reboots and only then informs me that it was unable to restore the system to that specific date. I have 30 processes running, sometimes less. All of them, except for Weatherbug, appear to be essential.

The changes that took place in the last few days, well that's a bit more complicated. I just moved here, and the computer was in a padded box(extremely well padded in a box which itself was popcorned and sealed in a larger box) for a while. But when I hooked it up in the beginning of last week, it ran pretty well. It's gotten much worse in the days since. It also locks up pretty frequently. I also noticed about a 50% increase in popups.

If the temps are fine, then it seems like time for a format.

If you can get it to work at all, start saving everything that matters to you.  If its going downhill you might not have a lot of run time left on it.  Even if you don'r have to reformat it, this won't be a waste of time.

I had a PC that had a bad ram problem, and it did some weird things kind of like you described.  Just a possiblility, but you might have RAM that went bad.  But then again, I guess anythings possible.

Take your soundcard out and if its onboard disable it.

Might be a driver/irq conflict. Its very similar to problems I've seen on SB Lives/128s/PCI's.

Empty your Temporary Internet Files folder in Windows.

Its probably loaded with all that porn you have been looking at.

Sounds Spyware related as zmeg noted. I had some similar problems and used "Spybot - Search and Destroy" to get rid of them. http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=start

For comfort, I would even back up essential files and reformat (or even FDisk/reformat) and use a browser like Mozialla or Opera. You can get rid of adware, but sometimes it has corrupted the browser, etc. leading to poor system reliability.
