Are Firewalls like ZA Superfluous if I use a Router?
« on: November 24, 2003, 12:15:25 PM »
I use this fine Netgear router at home:

I also have Zone Alarm installed on both PC's that are connected to said fine Netgear router above.

Is the use of ZA superfluous in this case? If I understand correctly, the Netgear router already has a good firewall built in, and software firewalls like ZA are not needed.

True?

True.  Mostly.  If you are REALLY paranoid, and you have the 802.11 enabled, someone could get on your 802.11 network and would then be behind the router firewall, allowing them to access your PCs if they had the further hacking ability to do that.  It is relatively easy to get into an 802.11 network, even an encrypted one, without any hacking skill.

Of course, this person would have to be parked in your driveway for that to work...

banana your router even with an inbuilt firewall is NOT going to filter outbound traffic.
Thats where Zone Alarm and similar come into there own with the ability to give you full control over which programs and apps are allowed outside access and pehaps more importantly to control whether they are granted server status.
It also checks to see whether any programs you have granted access have been modified in any way before allowing the connection.
