A letter to George Bush

A letter to George Bush from a reader of the Guardian.


You will find yourself assailed on every hand by some pretty pretentious characters collectively known as the British left. They traditionally believe they have a monopoly on morality and that your recent actions preclude you from the club. You opposed and destroyed the world's most blood-encrusted dictator. This is quite unforgivable.

I beg you to take no notice. The British left intermittently erupts like a pustule upon the buttock of a rather good country. Seventy years ago it opposed mobilisation against Adolf Hitler and worshipped the other genocide, Josef Stalin.

It has marched for Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Andropov. It has slobbered over Ceausescu and Mugabe. It has demonstrated against everything and everyone American for a century. Broadly speaking, it hates your country first, mine second.

Eleven years ago something dreadful happened. Maggie was ousted, Ronald retired, the Berlin wall fell and Gorby abolished communism. All the left's idols fell and its demons retired. For a decade there was nothing really to hate. But thank the Lord for his limitless mercy. Now they can applaud Saddam, Bin Laden, Kim Jong-Il . . . and hate a God-fearing Texan. So hallelujah and have a good time.

Before you race off to find all the letters that boldy state their man love for GWB, don't bother I read them already. This one just reminds me why I love you guys so much :)

You could easily replace the left for the right in that letter and talk about how it formed pseudo-Nazi, pro-Hitler, black shirted brigades in the 30's or even talk about how such paragons of virtue like Thatcher gave support to genocidal dictators like Pinochet and... Saddam Hussein!

By the way, we're just falling over people who love Bin Laden over here. I see placards proclaiming his greatness on my way to work and bars and restaurants are opening named in honour to this 'left wing idol'.

You have always been eager to forget or minimize the 911 war protests in Europe.  Not protests against the Iraq invasion mind you, but against the post 911 war in afghanistan.  

Oh well...

It's a matter of numbers of Grunherz. The demonstrations in Britain against the war in Afghanistan were tiny compared to those against Iraq.

Also, what has that got to do with this letter?

Don't try and lie about what? (I will leave out the apoplectic capitalization)

Read that thread. I think I clearly state that I don't remember protests about Afghanistan. That is a FACT. I don't remember them. When it is pointed out that some 20,000 protested I point out that such a number is miniscule compared to the million or so people in the streets in protest to the British stance on Iraq. That is also a FACT.

They were smaller but still large as usual protests go.  Thanks for not getting upset at the tone of my post. :)

Anyway I think it goes to show there really are some people like in that article that just love to bash the usa no matter what. For example its well known that many of the same groups coordinated and financed both the 911 and iraq protests - and they certainly arent mere pacifits.

Large? Have you ever been to London Grunherz? There's practically a protest going on all the time - it's part of English heritage to challenge the establishment. Like I said in the thread you highlighted, there were bigger protests over fox hunting than the protest regarding the war in Afghanistan. I think that suitably illustrates my point then and now.

That letter is glib nonsense and you know it.

You might be right Dowding, if you say 20,000 man protests are cmmon in London... I donno never been there except at Heathrow. :)  

Still the very Idea that 20,000 would come out openly in support of the taliban staying in power is sjocking..

The letter is funny and quite true..  :)

Well, the last time I was in London there were protests by Serbs and anti-war types regarding Kosovo. When a big debate comes along, you will see protests.

Still, lumping together supporters of Stalin and Hitler with those who protested (and died) to give women voting rights or abolish slavery simply because they superficially inhabit the same political space on some two dimensional measure is... stupid.

But thats part of the irony. The very same groups who would protest for womens rights and "human" rights  are likely to be the ones that protested the removal of Saddam or even the Taliban. I trust even you wouod admit that many on the left were smitten with Stalin and communism all the way through the cold war, ignoring all manner of outrages ansd singing moscow's tune..

That may well be true, but like I have said from the beginning of this thread, the converse is also true. How many right wingers supported Hitler, admired his tough stance on undesirables and wished Britain would find a fascist leader? Read up on this guy, for instance. You'll find it interesting:

What you're doing is finding a bunch of extremists and then painting a whole movement with the their colours. Anyone can do that - it's called a straw man argument.

it was written to guardian from fredrick forsythe the author. that dude has written some great books for sure.
