Laptop flyers?
« on: November 26, 2003, 05:18:04 PM »
I'm thinking about purchasing a laptop and one consideration is the gaming aspect of the machine. Most of the low-mid range machines run 32 MB integrated graphics, which I don't imagine handle AH very well. The too are the new mobile chips such as the Pentium Centrino, which puport to extend battery life.

Any recommendations? Or machines to stay away from? I've been leaning towards a Toshiba or Dell.

Thanks,
Damnmax

I have a Dell latitude - the built on card is a mighty 16 megs and handles AH, in its current incarnation, just fine.

Than again, that's about the only thing it handles just fine, and that will change with the AH re-write.

Wouldn't recommend 32 megs, even though 16 works for me now.

Well, I ordered this: (3 gig,  P-4, 1 gig ram, UXGA, 802.11g, 60 gig)
http://www.powernotebooks.com/configurator.php3?regular_model_id=286&model_id=284

It took me over a year to save for the Sager NP5680. I think it will be worth it.

Nice rig Ozark.

I happened to notice your configuration did not include WinXP, which leads me to a dumb question. Will the WinXP Home disk that came with my Desktop load up onto a blank laptop?  I know in the past you could do that with 98SE but aren't sure whether it's still possible.

lcd monitor is mucho better than crt eyeball cooker I used to use.

only downside is screen size.  with small plane/con sizes.. larger monitors are definitely better than laptop moniters.

Buy what ever *New* notebook you want,
but watch out just 1 thing.....
It must have GFORCE 4 graphics at least.
ONLY  G Force 4 suport the new trick with
pixels (i dont remember the name) who will give you the best satisfaction with the
graph effects in AHII.
Ofcourse radeon will play the same fast
BUT NOT all effects will be displayed.

I'm not playing on my laptop very often, but i've made a test for you :)

Dell Latitude C640 - PIV 1.8GHz Mobility Radeon 7500 video card (32mb) and 512megs of RAM

800x600 16bit colour - stable 60ftp wile manouvring just over the airfield (no smoke)
1024x760 16bit - stable 30fps all the time (with no smoke)

Now, before you'll make your choice, please note that we will have AH2 in a while... and you'll need a better machine to play it.

CPU speed, video card and memory are the major factors you should be interested in.

The very first thing (i'd say DECISIVE) is a video card, pick a notebook with the best video card you can get :) then look and the other things (including a brand ;) )

I'll do some AH2 beta test in a while for you

AH2 on  C640

800x600 16bit - 15-27fps
1024x768 16-bit - 10-20fps (13-14 most of the time)

If you'd like to play AH2 - you have to have something better then Radeon 7500 with 32mb of memory for sure :)

You still could use lower resolutions (including 640x480) and have it runnign smooth (i believe) but you have to akswer the question yourself - do you want to play this nice game (AH2) in a lo-res?

Of course it's something you can do in a emergency situations, but if you are thinking about a everyday playing... i thing you have to but something better.

Sorry for delay,

No, you can't reload your desktop XP in to the laptop and reactivate. I'm using XP Pro. You can use Win 2000 Pro. ;) ;)
