Harpoon Cancelled !!!!!
« on: November 28, 2003, 05:38:18 PM »
Lot's of fun memory's with the orgional.  Here's the press release:

SAN FRANCISCO - November 26, 2003 - Ubisoft™, one of the world's largest videogame publishers, today announced that it has officially ceased production on Harpoon IV and has chosen not to release the title.

"Ubisoft is committed to making the best military simulation games possible, and unfortunately, the Harpoon IV project wasn't meeting this goal. In our judgment, the product quality could never reach a level that meets or exceeds consumer expectations," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing, Ubisoft. "We will never intentionally ship a product that is sure to disappoint our discerning customer base."

While the game will not be finished or published by Ubisoft, discussions are underway to license the source code to a third-party group within the community in order to finish the game. Information regarding this development will be available soon at the game's community website harpoon4.ubi.com.

I dont know. Ubisoft has a reputation of releasing a good amount of top notch games recently, such as Rainbow Six 3 (XBox), Prince of Persia 3 (XBox), IL2 & FB, etc, so it would make no sense to ruin it by releasing half assed software.

I rather more companies have better quality control, than release crap.

Thats got to be the best comment I have read on this board in a while,,,

Thats the first computer game I ever played.  Started out with the box game, used to drive my wife crazy as I turned the living room into the north sea :)

Sneak a knox out of the formation and light up all its radars..the stupid commies would fire every thing they had at the poor bugger and then you could hit em hard...

Who still has the original or HarpII? I'll buy a copy of either. I lost mine years ago. Can't count the number of hours lost to that game.

I remember my first PC....12mhz 286.I thought,I can't leave the store without a game,so I bought Harpoon. It locked up EVERY TIME in the first mission no matter what I tried.

Frustrated, the next day I looked over some more games, and purchased "Their Finest Hour-The Battle of Britain",and I've been a flight sim guy ever since.

Yeah Harpoon online, via AOL, along with Air Warrior on AOL where probably my first multiplayer games... omg... I loved those games..

I recently was looking for harpoon, and stumbled across #4, its a shame that they're not going to release, I was hoping to actually get back into the naval strategy...

Thanks for the info..

Harpoon2 and the updated harpoon3 rank among the best modern naval games out there when it comes to realism. It may not offer any eye-candy, but from my experiences with real naval simulators its fairly accurate.

We used something similar at the naval academy, and i've read somewhere that the US navy also used it for a while.

Yeah, this sucks. They are, apparently, turning the code over to somebody though.
