Glass?
« on: December 07, 2001, 09:37:00 AM »
Is it possible to add a glass effect to the cock pits? I just think it would give me more of a "sitting in the cockpit" fealing and less "i am the plane" fealing when playing AH.

Plus it would make the graphics look 10x better.

Or do you think that this would murder your frame rates?  Or would it for a fact kill them HTC?

This post made me think of Il-2.  Its definately a mixed bag as far as benifits go.

As far as I know, DJ, only the P39 has the glass that reflects light inside the cockpit in Il-2.

I've never noticed it with the other planes.

There really are no benefits to it, however, you will be unable to see any plane opposite where the sun is glaring off your cockpit glass.

But, of course HTC would have to make it so the sun doesn't shine through your plane too... as it is now, if the sun is below the terrain (night time), the sun glare effect on your dashboard and other parts of your plane's cockpit are still there. As if the sun is in your cockpit.

I wasnt really thinking of its reflecting qualities, more so the stained look of it just being there. Although that would be great to, would take some more programming im sure. As for just adding the glass would just be a modeling issue i would think.

Swulfe i think  what your saying about the sun going through you plane is the effect of it blinding you buy looking into it. (looking at the plane its going through.)

*edit** doh NM swulfe i read your post again, i understand what your saying now, somehting totaly different**

Wulfie... the glass on the 109 was a major sore spot in the initial public beta release of Il-2.  Remember that horrid "thatching"?

Basically, the glass has to be rendered in some manner.  The sunlight spots is one effect, but there needs to be more to get that feeling.  All of that will have to be simulated and fudged on to a great extent.

I think it would be cool, but I'm wondering if the resources necessary could be justified.  I also wonder if the outcome would simply be a topic for even more "this isn't realistic" debates... as if we didn't have enough topics already.

Oh- so that thatching wasn't just me?

In the full release only the P39, as near as I can remember, has sun glare on the canopy- but I think that's because it's a rounded canopy.

Can flat glass have sun spots or whatever on it to make it look like sun is reflecting off it? From the inside of the cockpit.... outside is a different matter.

I'm just asking, cuz when I'm driving into or away from the sun in my car JUST after I wash my car's windows I don't see any glaring on my glass windows... I only notice it when my windows are dirty.

From my experiences with graphics i dont see how it would effect frames to drastictly. (modeling and mappings for various games, for pleasure only, never comercial)Unless they made the glass as close to real as possible (with the lighting and such). Which i would doubt since the interior is gamey in most planes (the skining of them).

Basicly it would just be a matter of creating the bush on the model and making the texture transpearent. The lighting wouldnt change sense it is more than likely "entinty bases" and comes from one point in the "world".

Peronaly i think it would be a great addition to the graphics and add a great fealing for flight and fighting. Having them stained as glass it would make fighting in the stormy areas of the map very fun!

I could reference 3d shooters like Coutner-strike where you get the effect of "i am a gun and arms".. in AH i get the effect of "i am the nose of a plane". It would be great to have another added visual to make you feal like you are sitting in the cockpit of a plane, anything to get the adreniline rushing more.

sorry im babbling now ..  :)

Might be nice... Falcon 4 does this very nicely, imo. Helps alittle with SA also.

We had glass in on early alphas, it is a very large fps hitter do to the fact you are normaly filling almost the entire screen with an alpha blend. We desided it wasn't worth the fps hit.

Think he is talking more about the wwiionline cockpit glass. As the glass is bullet proof, it adds a dark texture to the look of it. Almost a tinted look, then you open the canopy and see how bright it is outside. Compared to the lemon cleaned, see through glass we have. Although the FM in wwiionline is easymode trash, i am partial to the way the cockpit glass looks and there view system. No direct 6 view..

Dog out.....

It was overdone on the Hurricane in WWIIOL, IMO.  I didn't like it (so I always flew with the canopy open), but the other planes were just fine in regards to the "tinting".

Wow someone got WW2OL to run on there system??

For the 10 minutes i had it running i thought the interiors were cool to, i really dug how when you bailed you had to open the canopy and stand up. (shortly after i flew through a mountain into a groundless area, where there was no up or down.. "have you ever been experienced?? i ha-a-ave..." lol then my pc locked up)

Yea that style of glass is what im talking about.  :)

I'd give up a direct 6 view for two seperate views to look down the side of your aircraft. It ain't that hard for me to lean over and turn my head and body just enough to see down the side of a Cozy I flew in (was strapped in like a racing car driver which is incidently like a fighter pilot).
