AIM and IP tracing
« on: December 05, 2003, 09:45:19 PM »
OK,

Check this out. Someone has been stalking me over AIM for quite some time now - I want to find out who it is. I know that if I direct connect to them, through their IP I can work on identifying them. Question is, i'm running XP pro with nothing special. Is there a piece of software on the market that allows me to check what computers im connected to, etc.

Perhaps a firewall and they might get bored.

You have a website that you can access the logs for?  Just put up a small page with an interesting name like 'yourmother.htm' and send the URL to him with a comment that will make him check it out (for example, 'While you've been harassing me, I found a picture of you mother:  http://website.com/yourmother.htm')

Send the link to him, then check the logs next day.  It'll have their IP address.  Then just do a 'tracert 155.155.155.155' (put in the IP address you collected) to find out which ISP he's with.  There are other things you can look for now that you have that info.

Do a Google for "Commview".  Should be just the ticket.

Tumor,

As stated earlier, AIM connections proxy through AOL servers, so Commview wouldn't help.  You don't need commview to do something this simple, btw.  If the harasser was connecting directly to his computer, all you need to do is type 'netstat' to see all active connects in progress.

You put up a webpage for him to click to then checked the logs?  If you did, you should almost certainly have his IP address unless he's behind a router, and even then you'll have the IP address of his router, which is enough to track him down.

I dont have the capability to post up a website - at least not with the admin abilities you specify. Are there services, possib ad-supported that would allow such access's?

Misunderstood... I thought Wolf was going to go direct with the guy.  Worked for me on Yahoo anyway.
