Realistic Arena Idea

I don't know the appeal it would have, or how realistic it would be...

But I wish for an arena where you gotta be the best, and you gotta stay alive.

Aces High guys said somewhere that they need to strike a balance between penalising death and encouraging engagements, so that the game's fun and somewhat realistic...
In doing that, they tend for the middle ground...

but why not tend to extremes?

There's a way to make death have the ultimate penalty and still encourage engagements:

I imagine an arena with the following rules:
1)you die, you're out. you lose half your points. you don't fly anymore on this ToD.
2)you're captured, you're out. you lose 1/4 of your points, and you don't fly anymore on this ToD.
3)you bail or ditch, you lose some points for losing your plane, and you gotta wait a little time before flying again (time to get back to base and rest a little)
4)you land, you get to fly again.

At the end of the ToD, the best guy gets a major reward.
This arena can even be a competition event, like those quakefests, where there's a prize at the end, and HiTech gets lots of media.

Or, if not, just a major reward like a year free, for being the best in the ToD.

So you gotta engage to be the best, and you can't be dead.

Imagine the adrenaline rush of trying to rtb with a con on your six on the third week in the arena and you're thinking "OH GOD PLEASE HELP ME"

maybe some tweeks like stronger base defenses would be needed, but..

how bout it?

an alternative to this idea:

make it squad based. the best squad at the end gets free months of play for the whole squad.

or if its player based, not squad, make it so that when you log in, you gotta fly on the side with the less players, automatically.. that way both sides are evenly balanced for players.

Would be great and works well in other games....  However:

1.)  Those games mostly have "free" play.  People pay for there subscription here and would not take kindly to having to sit it out.  I think this would reduce the number of people willing to play/pay drastically.

2.)  They have something similar to this in the SEA.  Usually have limited lives in there.  People who like these scenarios can play here and when they are out, they can go to the MA and still play.

3.) Go to the CT for realistic maps and planes.  Lots of fun to be had there.

Though in theory it would be nice, in the paying world it is not practical.

roland ...

I don't know if you have or have not read the gameplay strategy that will be implemented in the new AH II : TOD (I am guessing that you haven't) but from what I have read, it has a similarities to what you are describing.
SlapShot - Blue Knights

Guppy: "The only risk we take is the fight, and since no one really dies, the reward is the fight."

actually the only thing I read was Pyro's March interview, where he mentions that death would be penalised, but not harshly. I mean, you won't lose the points of the character you're "building".
Which, imho, is dumb. Or, if that's too harsh, the dude that dies should at least have a percentage of his points taken away..

and buzz
about the free play thingie, we'd still have the AH-regular arena... but in this case, maybe we'd have too few players in the death-is-final one... so I don't know.

But I wish death was punished more severely and landing rewarded more too...

and engagements encouraged somehow, maybe with prize for the best and recognition for the runner-ups..

But, now, thinking about it, this setup would reward the best pilot in combat. Period. But maybe other people would find it unapealing cause it doesn't take coordinated tactics to further the war effort into consideration, like taking fields, etc.

It's a complex issue that all sims to date have tried to deal with in some way or another.

But no matter if you have a system that rewards strategy, cooperation, fighting skills, or whatever.
At the end of the day, the pilot should make it home alive.

That's, imho, a recipe for great adrenaline.. any engagement can end you.
But maybe that's too much for the average player.
Maybe Hitech Creations don't want geezers having heart attacks over losing a month worth of character building in senseless gangbangs...

But, in war, death was often senseless.. and pilots wanted to live, usually.

Some form of penalty for dying is needed. that's alls Im saying...
and the harsher the penalty, the more fun it is to fly.

unless you're not into that...

its an endless discussion, really...
