What altitude...
« on: December 09, 2003, 04:16:50 PM »
...do you do most of your dogfighting? Do you prefer to start moderately high, say 15-18K? Or do you like to have a really good advantage and climb above 20k b4 starting your hunt? Personally, I find that if I climb too high, I lose a lot of opportunities. By the time I get down to my intended victim, I'm either going too fast, or someone else is on him and they get the kill. So I like to get to about 12-18k, no higher unless its a long-legged jabo run.

I'd LOVE to fly nothin but jug and duke it out at 25k like they did over Europe, but everyting happens under 15k and lower, where jug is red meat for La7 pukes

I like 15-20k for most planes. A large alt advantage gives you enough potential energy to run down things like La7s that would normally walk away like you were standing still.

I wish I could find something to engage with my Ta-152 at 30k, but it never happens.

In the MA, I stick to the P38 exclusively.  If given a choice, I'd fly around 25k.  However, since most combat in the MA happens around 10k, I just auto-climb until I reach the furball, then dive in from whatever height I reached, though I generally stop about 17k if the fight happens to be further away than I thought.

20,000ft to 15,000ft is my usual cruising altitudes.  Gives me a lot of option in the P-38 and in AH at least, the best operational altitudes for the P-38.

Deck to 10k I esp like it down on the deck & dirty in la7.

But ussually end up there no matter what I fly.

A20 NOE missions, Yak9T GV intercepts, mixing it up with spits & nik's in Yak9U. Or chasing ponys in a la7. Its all more fun down in the bushes.

no wonder I never see most of yu.   anything over about 2-5 k is a waste of time 99% of the time.   if it is above you it can't hurt you.

A while ago, Shane (I think it was) showed me the best mission ever in AH. Forward Interdiction I think he called it.

I get in my Yak, take off, and head to a rear base of the enemy, while on the deck. That way, when they take off from that base to attack where the hordes are, I can get a decent fight or two before the total gangbang starts in... at which point, I can usually dissengage. Then again, I haven't had much MA time for the past 8 months (Since my daughter was born lol).

Anyhow, all of my fighting is on the deck, if I'm over 10k I'm probably AFK making a sandwich or something.

I take off, point toward the red bar, hit auto-climb, then go grab a beer and alt-tab out to do work or read the forums.  Sometimes that puts me above the fight, sometimes it puts me below it.  I'm not very particular.
