One-life-to-live Series of Missions
« on: December 11, 1999, 02:44:00 PM »
Hi, all.  I'm developing an idea for my squadron, The Buccaneers, and thought I might float the idea here for possible mass participation. I'm setting up a series of 12 fighter missions, to be run 2/week, and rotating through the countries -- that way, no single country will feel left out or picked on. These missions will be about 90 minutes in duration, and will be set up to authentically replicate a typical mission profile, such as escort, fighter sweep, JABO, intercept, etc.  We will also rotate through all fighter types currently available, so no one has an advantage simply by virtue of having flown exclusively only one type of ac.

The difference here will be that you will only have ONE life for the entire 12 missions...period. The idea is to give people a taste of what it was like trying to survive a real tour of duty, while still attempting to acccomplish the mission.  I will be making up a campaign ribbon to give to all who participate; to earn one, you must survive five missions as a minimum. A few other special awards will be given, such as for top-scoring pilot and most missions successfully completed. Should you be killed in combat before completing the minimum required 5 missions, you will receive the dreaded "We regret to inform you..." telegram instead  . There will also be certain mission objectives that must be fulfilled for a mission to count. For example, if you're to fly to waypoint 1 and rtb for a fighter sweep, every pilot must make it to waypoint one and rtb to get credit.

The way I can handle this is for people to e-mail me their desire to participate, including which days they'll be available to participate(schedule to be announced). I'll then publish a flight roster -- no one will be turned away if they simply show up, but I want to know ahead of time how many flights/squadrons I'll be able to field. I'll also need volunteers for buff duty on a couple of nights, so I can set up escort fighter missions. People who volunteer to drive the "dicke autos" will receive credit for the tour of duty, regardless if they survive or not.

We will be using VERY strict rules to verify kills for people. Gun camera footage or an eyewitness of a plane lossing a wing/blowing up/crashing to the ground will be required to get credit. Assists will count as half a kill.

So what do you think? Who's interested, and do you have any suggests to improve the idea? Feel free to e-mail me now if you want to get on the e-mail list for the general pilots' roster.

Hmmm...only received one e-mail so far, and no one's posted a reply here.  Does that mean no one's interested? At least negative feedback let's me know someone's listening  .

Great idea Rojo!

Do you have fixed times for these missions, or can players go and fly the missions when ever they want?

What I mean is, is that I live in Europe, which probably makes it quite impossible for me to participate in a fixed-time mission    On the other hand, if you have a mission planned that can be flown anytime, I could fly them with my squad mates and then email you the reports and guncam films.  How does that sound?

We have some experience on similar kind of mission based flying, check our website at  www.muodos.fi/LLv34 , especially the kill board and pilot pages.

Here's my email: ville.pitkanen@hut.fi

Camo: Well, the idea was to set up specific dates for the missions, to allow maximum cooperative type efforts. Having anticipated the desire for our European brethern to particpate, my thoughts were to hold half the missions on a Thrusday evening (EST) and half on Saturday afternoon (EST), say around 1600 EST.  Would this Saturday time work out all right for most of the European players?

As for the idea of sending your squad a canned mission to be flown at a time of your convenience, I'm not sure how practical that would be. Things like the escort and intercept missions will require more coordination, and my idea was to have a psuedo-CM that would act as a mission controller. This CM would monitor your progress and act as a GCI as necessary. He might also throw in a last minute change to your objectives or flight path, just to help simulate the fog and friction of war. Still, there's been considerable interest from the European community, and I'm determined to find a time conducive to your participation.  E-mail me with your thoughts on what day(s) of the week and time(s) would work for you and your sqaud-mates, and I'm sure we can work things out.

I'm in!

I think we need to make sure that the objectives for each mission are crystal clear, unambiguous, and well-focused.  Each flight should know what it's job is and how to tell when it's job is done so it can egress in a timely manner and live to fight another day.  What we don't want is for flights to start out with one mission and then arbitrarily decide to go off and do something else (unless, of course, a deviation in plan is ordered by those in command) and suddenly find themselves in big trouble and die unecessarily (remeber the New Guinea campaign when four members of our patrol decided to go off on their own and wound up feeding the sharks?).

This kind of thing is a great departure from the normal furball-to-death routine we see daily in the arena.  If you want to participate in later missions, you have to first LIVE through the earlier ones.  Cool.

I would also like to see what the definitions of surviving a mission are.  I would assume if you're shot up pretty bad but able make it back to friendly territory to bail that would count as "living" through the mission, whereas bailing over the enemy base may mean you were captured and thus out of the game.  Same for ditching.  We need to make these rules as clear as possible so everyone knows what is expected of them.

Finally, will there be similar restrictions placed on defenders?  For once, it would be nice to be able to sweep an area clean of fighters and not have an infinite number of fighters to deal with.

I'm all for this thing and am looking forward to the discipline and teamwork it's going to take.  Commanders will find out how to wage a campaign with limited resources and wingmen will find out just how valuable they can be to each other.  None of this "bomb, auger, and fly again" stuff.  Let's do it!

I have been fortunate enought to talk often with rojo (a.k.a. sabre) on his mission ideas.  This one is a real winner.  It should spark some really "realistic" engagements.

I am up for any support required of me to make this one happen!

I would note that this type of mission will require a lot of personal integrity among the pilots participating; but, i do think the people I've generally associated with in the arena are up to it!

COUNT ME IN SABRE!

Hi Rojo!

I kinda thought you would say that about the canned missions

Those saturdays might actually work, 16EST is 22CET (Central European Time). I will participate whenever possible. Unfortunately I'll be busy on this saturday, so I'm unable to be there.  I'll inform my squadmates to take a look at this thread, though.

So far all this sounds promising.  If it works out, these will become great events.  Having European and US people co-operating and shouting on RW sounds like lots of fun

Keep up the good work
