No because most wineries today use synthetic corks so there's no cork rotting now. Also wine used to be stored, and pored, with the label up because setiment would gather at the bottom, but nowadays the setiment is filtered out of wine before it's bottled.

If the cork dries out it won't seal (turning the wine to crap) and will fall apart during opening (filling the crappy wine with corky tidbits).
