Here's a quick tutorial on all the features of the view system.
The view system consists of 5 view modes and 3 direction modes. The view modes are internal, external, chase, fixed, and bombsight. The direction modes are snap, pan, and instant. Here's how they work:
<F1> Default View- This keypress always returns you to internal snap mode from whatever view mode or setting you were in.
<F2> Internal View Mode- This takes your view point back inside the plane without changing your direction mode.
<F3> External View- Moves the camera outside the plane and keeps its position relative to the plane.
<F4> Chase View- Like External View, but with a lag.
<F5> Fixed View- Takes you to an external view that is fixed in space.
<F6> Bomb sight- Moves you to the bombadier position on planes that have them. Looking down will then put you in the bomb sight.
<F7> Snap Mode- The camera quick-pans between each of your views.
<F8> Pan Mode- Camera pans using the view keys.
<F9> Instant- Views shift instantly without the pan of the snap mode.

[] Bracket keys control your camera distance in external view and allow you to change your field of view in zoom mode.

Left and right arrow keys move your head side to side.

Up and down arrow keys move your head forward and aft.

PageUp and PageDown keys move your head up and down.

<F10> saves your head position.

<HOME> returns you to the default head position.

Example: I want to make it so my back view in the P-51 looks around the headrest. While holding down my backview I press the arrow keys and pageup/pagedown keys to achieve my desired viewpoint. Once I'm there, I hit <F10> to save it. Now everytime I look in my back view, my head position will be in this new spot.  This can be done separately to all 27 views.

Z - Zoom mode. Toggles you between the default 90 degree field of view and a narrower field of view. The exact field of view you want in the zoom mode can be controlled with the bracket keys.

Keypad views- A standard numeric keypad view system with <Keypad 0> as a down view. There are also two separate forward views. The normal one requires no keypress while the alternate forward view uses keypress 8. This lets you map two different head positions to a forward view.

Aces High also has a built-in keymapper that lets you reassign functions to whatever keys you want.  Key assignments can even be changed while you're inflight.

Excellent!
But lemme get this straight.
I assign my head position to my 2 key on the number pad any way I like it.
Then press F10.
Then I hit 2 and it will automatically go back to the one I like?

Question: will we be able to save head positions for each plane?

I think the power of Saitek is gonna shine in this one. Gonna be usin all three modes just to look around!

Tomorrow sounds good to me.

Yo Pyro,
I'm glad you explained the F10 function.  When I first read:  "<F10> saves your head position."  I thought F10 was a defensive move you could invoke (like throwing your head between your knees) to avoid a pilot kill.  ;}

The project looks interesting, hope to see you there.

Moe em down,

Yes they are saved on a per plane basis.

I don't suppose you could put in the "move your head with your mouse" option?

Ivedog, that way of working is really cumbersome for me.  The only way to make it slick is to have a mouse thingy on your throttle (i.e. F-16 TQS, Saitek X-35 T)

Do you do alright with it?

Pardon the dumb question, but will external view be available for fighters in flight???

Seems as though enabling external view will make it much, much harder to do the old 'low 6 sneak in and blow him away' type engagement.

Please pyro, offline or H2H external views only!

Hey Rebel,

Some time ago I decided to put my mouse on the left side of my keyboard (just outside my throttle).  Fortunately, I got used to it in about a week.  Now I think I'm actually steadier with my left hand than my right!

Using sims such as F-15 and European Air War as examples, for me at least, there isn't a more intuitive or natural way to look around.

I'm wondering if this is one of those really difficult things to implement that us non-programmers ask "why not put this in?"

Anyhow, if it isn't to terribly hard to throw in, I'd love to see it as an option.

Ive:  I'm not sure a mouselook would add much.

Was playing with the view system tonight for the first time, and if you hit <F8> then you can pan around using the view hat.  The only problem with that is that you can't snap to other views at the same time...  The view hat moves the view just about the right amount too, not too slow, not too fast.  It's just right.  I think you'll enjoy it...

I just want to know if the Warbirds/AW view system can be reproduced.  That is having two "stick modes" that are pretty much identical button configs except for the view hat?  One mode looks on the level plane and straight up, while another looks up at 45 degree angles.

There is still multiple joystick configs and buttons to change to other configs on the fly...right?

Hans.

Hans,

With the "PAN" mode you no longer need them
