He-111 pilot story
« on: December 16, 2003, 06:47:13 PM »
I work at an air museum, so every so often I get to hear stories about aviation.
I called a customer to ask what particular diecast He-111 model he'd like. The reason he wanted one is that his father-in-law was a He-111 pilot during WWII and flew exclusively on the Eastern front. He has his pilot log book with all of his combat missions in them(in German of course). One particular mission, which was his last in combat, was the one he told me about.
A He-111 has only the pilot to fly the plane. Only one set of controls, no co-pilot. He was flying a mission and they took a hit in the cockpit. This guy was blinded, but still conscious. Since none of the crew knew how to fly the plane, they guided him back to their base and talked him down to a landing. After a stay in the hospital, he regained his sight, but was relugated to a training squadron for the rest of the war.
A pretty amazing story if you ask me.
