"flyby" sound related freeze until "loaded"
« on: December 14, 2003, 08:21:35 PM »
Takes two passes to fully load it. Then smooth as silk.

1 or 2 sec freeze when it's loading.

Replicated everytime I'm fresh online.

Some sort of sound preload when clicking "fly" would be in order to eliminate it.

Once it's loaded it works great.

( and testing AH2 is a WHOLE lot of fun when you have a great fight and opponent - ASW, it made the juices flow :) )

I guess he means, that when you first time come close to a plane you haven't been close (<200 yards) before, your screen freezes for 1-2 seconds. This could happen also on second flyby, when it was fast passing by.
This only occurs on first closing, never again after it runs smooth.

LOL thx nopoop - it was one helluva fight :). It took a minute or two for my hands to stop shaking - haven't had an adreneline rush like that in awhile in AH .

Cheers,

Well now it's murky Dale.

ASW and I did two merges engines off in different AC when first online and I got just a "hitch" on the first pass and ASW was smooth. Second engine off pass both of us were smooth.

Third and fourth were engine on smooth for both of us.

Spit V and an A-5 on both days.

Only difference in the experiment was today we were both on the same side. Yesterday we were goodguy badguy.

I don't know, have to retest. First day ANY first encounter ( friend or foe ) was accompanied by a freeze of a half a second or better.

Can't duplicate it today.

I don't have a clue on programming. "If" the LOD and flyby sound for a specific plane is loaded ( the pause or freeze ) does it stay loaded for just that session ?? Or does it become permantly loaded in the players program ??

Cuz I just fly'um :)

Elsewhere the pause was takin away by the player preloading the a/c with a Fly.cfg file with alllllll the planes loaded one after another when you clicked "Fly".  A wall of textbuffer stuff. Which was pretty dumb, but it worked.

But I only had a "hitch" today running a solid 43 FPS.

43 on an old box is very good.

I tried turning the external engine sounds all the way down, and it seemed to stop the lag.
It also  seems to happen sometimes the first time you pull the trigger
Is there a way to turn off the smoke trails but leave on the tracers ? (not that that has anything to do with the bug)

In addition to the stutter on the first merge, I was getting stutter when I toggled the text radio to enter text last night while fighting with gOOb.  Course my fps in a fight are pretty choppy anyway but not bad just flying around.

I was also involved in this test with Flit and a few others and I agree turning external engine sound completely down reduced the first merge freeze dramatically.

I find it's still a little choppy when i'm tracking close on someones 6,   i'm wondering if this has to do with the distance counter as it seems to coinside with the way it counts.

example that I noticed is when real close and in zoomed view when number changed slight studder and or choppy effect happens.

So far in this latest version landing shots has been extremely difficult (not that I ever landed shot easy anyhow) as where i'm shooting after I pull the trigger planes slighty warp.

Hope this Helps
