It's the new secret codeword you use when calling someone a "nazi".

The purpose is to allow you "deniability" so you can pretend you're being polite.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Just look at the way it is used on this board and by whom it is used. It's pretty clear what they're trying to convey.

If it isn't then why the need to add neo to conservative? Conservatives really haven't changed all that much. At least not in the ways that liberals object to. Most of the libs I've see on TV say it with a sneer that says to me pretty much what Toad said.

Well when you read something like this...

"The "Ace of Spades" turned out to be a "Joker".

Another victory for the USA/GWB. Another crushing defeat for the Leftist-Liberal Appeasers and the Islamofascists............

I'm glad the coward was captured alive. A humiliating trial, televised worldwide, followed by dragging his chicken-**** bellybutton in chains to a bare cell to serve a life sentence, will have a great effect on the Muslim world. Not to mention the side-benefit of rubbing the faces of the Axis of Weasels(Chretien, Putin, Schroeder, and that piece of Frog excrement, Chirac)in it.

Muslims understand humiliation. And the "Loyal Opposition" aka the Aid-and-Comfort-To-The-Enemy Democrat Left will continue its slide down the razor-blade of ignominious defeat....

The conservative PARTY has changed much though, they lean much more left today than say, 15 years ago.  Hey at least one of our political parties is attempting to meet half-way with the other, can't same the same thing for the democrats, they're still pissed that they lost majority of both the house and the senate.

It's perhaps my preception but I don't think  we can compare (for exemple) GW Bush and R.Reagan politic.

It look extremly different for me.

But I was more reacting to the equation : néo-con = nazi.
At least for me it's in no way comparable.

and btw I've no idea of what a liberal is ...
What I usualy call a liberal is also called a neo-con in France :D

I've heard conservatives refer to other people claiming to be conservatives, "Neo conservatives".

But I don't really know the difference between either.

I choose to stay away from the whole "I'm on someone's side, yay!" labelling, so I don't really know what constitutes what in the side you choose, and on what tier you choose to be on. (Neo or non-neo, or whatever)

I think the ones that use it mean hardcore conservatives. How many other political parties use the term "neo" other than the neo-nazis? Coincidence? I think not.

Actually a neo-conservative is a conservative who used to be a liberal, or at least not a conservative.  Using terms like 'Axis of weasels' doesn't indicate  somebody's political stripe.  But you do a good job of proving that the term 'neo-conservative' is used by people who don't know what it means but think it sounds sinister.

Neoconservatives is the self-given label, not a derogatory reference to neonazis.

They are mostly former democratic followers of Leo Strauss - who taught the neo-patonic views that elite should rule and lie to the masses, the state must be ever-expanding and such. They basically hijacked the republican party to the grief of the real conservatives - who sometimes call themselves paleo-conservatives because they subscribe to the old free-market and limited-government stuff.
