Earlier this year a R22 went down north of our airport while practicing autorotations (irony).

Was talking to one of our FAA examiners the other day and he was telling me a week or so ago a student from the flight school across the street was on his way back from his long cross country. Put the plane down about a mile from the airport on a street due to engine failure. Managed to not hit any poles, wires or cars. When they took the plane apart to bring it home the FAA noted "It didn't really leak a lot of fuel from the wings when we took them off."

Did he get out ok? trying to see if i can make out the code on the tail/front of the Helo so i can search for it, they look different though, tail looks like N01DN or something, and front N101D

Thanks for posting this again.  I had tried the previous link posted earlier (to put in another helocopter thread) but it wasn't working.  Gotta save this one at home.

BTW...

The guy had bought the helo but hadn't had any training in it.  He walked away from the accident. (this deduced from the film)

The best part is the camera man just telling him to stay the hell away from it.

Seems like he has absolutely no idea how to control that thing. Reminds me of a friend who once bought a RC-plane and wouldn't let me show how to fly it...He managed to stay airborne for half a minute before nosediving it in.

The man flying that helicopter is Jim Wright, the builder and flyer of the Hughes RH1 racer replica.  He was killed earlier this year when the racer made a forced landing in Yellowstone National Park on it's way back from Oshkosh 2003.

I saw the plane at Oshkosh, and I wonder how a man who had such wonderful craftsmanship and attention to detail could be so foolish.  The plane was immaculate.  Some say that he took off with a known gearbox problem on his last flight.  I guess good craftsmanship doesn't imply common sense.
