HT/Pyro New F4U-4 climb data please read
« on: December 18, 2003, 09:27:00 PM »
I have always disgreed with the current F4U-4 climb data and I have provided some much more significant charts. I assume the arguement against the greater climb rates was the supposed use of high octane fuel 115/145. Well I have conclusive data to prove otherwise from the F4U-4 Pilots Operating manual.

First the charts I believe are accurate for the 1945 F4U-4.

And here is the climb chart for Mil power showing 54.5" to 55"MAP which is Mil power with 100/130 100octane fuel. It shows the mil power climb rate to 20,000FT in 6.5minutes. This matches the mil power climb rate of the charts I posted previously dated April 1945. The weight of the aircraft in the flight test also weights almost 200LBS more than our F4U-4 which takes more time to get to 20K at combat power than this chart shows at mil power.

Here is the corresponding Fuel grade consumption chart showing MAP for corresponding power settings.

I have the entire appendices for this manual. It is the most complete I have ever seen.

Also included are the glide ratio stated at 13:1 at 140Knots. I have never seen this information included anywhere else.

I hope this data can help change the FM for AH2.

Are you sure that's 1945 Vought F4U-4?  It hard to say that F4U-4 been change little bit before Korean War.

The chart does have detailed specifications at top (even as to the variety of propellor and carburetor installed), I suppose this would be quite easy to determine.

I am not sure what specific detail might be missing that you are concerned about, as you did not say.

Hi guys-first time on this forum.

Can someone source me the '48 edition of the pilot's manual?  I have the manual for the -1 series but not this one.

Thanks,

A few things.

1. The charts I posted are from the Vought Archives and are dated April 1945 on the bottom. The F4U-4 did not see combat until April 1945.

2. I have F4U-4C charts from 1946 where the climb is even higher. I am not asking for that.

3. Most importantly you must remember that NO F4U-4's were built after 1945. The F4U-5 was produced in 1946.

4. The only major modification done to the F4U-4 after 1945 was the addition of the R2800-42W which was built for higher allowable MAP at mil power. This was intoduced in 1946.

5. The charts I posted are for the R-2800-18W at 54.5" and 55"MAP. The climb chart from the manual matches the climb chart from 1945 exactly.

I have the F4U-4 manual from Dec 1944. It does not have the same index but the climb index at normal power matches the climb index of the 1952 Revision.

Here is the link to the manual which I purchased.

Not yet.

I do generally email Pyro when I get new data. I should send him this stuff offline. I don't think Pyro spends much time on the boards when HTC is doing development so he probably hasn't seen this.

I will drop him an email soon.

Yeah, Im pretty sure that HTC staff are busy on AH2 and so I think F4U-4 setup have to wait until Beta completed.  Hopefully, HTC will get your email about F4U-4 setup.
