PYRO - which Spit IX is it in AH ?
« on: December 17, 1999, 03:49:00 PM »
( if you could clarify that for WB we well it would be cool )

There were 3 very different types of Spit IX produced: F, HF, LF. 3 different engines - and very different when it coms to speed and climbrates.

Please clarify which one is modeled in AH ?
( and in WB ?   )

Thank you.

Don't be a jacka__
If AH had Me109G and nothing afterwards - you would be asking the same stupid questions.

It's a valid question and deserves an answer.

The AH Spit is a F.IX with a Merlin 61.

Don't ask me questions about other games.

"spit IX F with merlin 61"

How would performance differ from :

IX LF (clipped wings ?) with merlin 66
and
IX HF with merlin 70

Also was this a later/earlier spit than the LF or HF

Just curious

fd ski:
From The Great Book of World War II Airplanes: "Most of the 5,600 Spitfire IXs were built as LF.IXs, their supercharger gearing optimised for best performance below 6,000 feet (1,830m); less than a quarter had the medium-altitude-rated Merlin, and a tenth of the IXs built were HF models with engines rated at 22,500ft (6,850m) in top gear."

The least produced IX was the HF.IX.

From Jane's All the World's Aircraft, 1945/6 Edition, it is stated that the F, LF and HF models of the IX "May be fitted with 'E' armament".

It would seem that Pyro's choice of F.IX wasn't all that unwarranted.

leonid - that's why i wrote that i'm not sure if i remember right...
F was teh worst preformer of them all - that' s my main point
LF was optimized to fight 190's at all alts. It was rather fast on the deck
HF was made to fight 109's up high - and were actually far faster then 109's up high

Look up that link - good stuff there.
( i know i posted it wrong last time ;( )

It's probably unwarranted and all that but IMHO Jane's "All (?) of the World Aircraft 1945" is the worst reference of all - I got one for Xmas a few years back and the section on Soviet Airforce is just abysmal  . I think Switzerland lists more plane types than Russia. And the info on what's listed is err... incomplete if one choses a polite expression to describe it.

I know what you mean, lynx.  What they have on the Lavochkin fighters is probably third-person, five times removed.  Of course, when one thinks back on the political climate of the day it ...
