Vought F4U-2

I have to believe that F4U-2 is very rare because Vought Aircraft Company only make 34 in 1943 and they were reject by the Navy because again Hellcat nightfighter was better?  Is that true?

Actually the F4U-2 was accepted into carrier service by the Navy in 1943 wa before the day fighter. At some point the Navy transitioned to the F6F night fighter. Why I am not sure.

What I do know is that the F4U-2 had a very primitive radar setup.  I believe the F6F had much more modern solution.

Rafe35,

I have to look up the radar set data but the F4U-2 used 5 .50 caliber MG. The outboard machine gun was removed to allow the radar pod to fit.

Check the date of this photo. 1942!! The whole F4U not being carrier qualified was bunk. Check my sig for more detail.
