GAZ-64, first Soviet 4WD "Jeep" was made after someone saw a faint photo of a "Bantam" in an "Army Munitions" (IIRC) magazine, in fact - before it was even tested.
Later Willie's Jeep became a nickname ("Villis", Виллис) for a 4WD for decades, replaced by "kozyol" (goat) for GAZ-69 and UAZ-469 that replaced it in 1972.
GAZ-69 is famous for the ability to go where any other vehicle gets stuck. UAZ-469 was not that trusted, but in mid-70s it have got to the Elbrus moutntain "saddle". In mid-90s British Land-Rover team tried to do the same thing, but failed completely ~1km below, at the "Shelter of Eleven", 4200m.
The only problem with "kozyol" is that it doesn't run without a sergeant who spends all his time laying under it
