Managed to go to IWM Duxford today.  Here's a couple of piccies of an airworthy La-9.  What's interesting is seeing how the guns fit in.

4 23mm in the nose... So beautiful it makes me want to cry... This would put the CHOG to shame. :)

A question, with a cannon-bird like that, do the guns always all fire together, or has any designer ever made a effort to stagger the firing so as to have a better spread of shells?

There would be an automatic spreading of fire since the guns are interrupted by the propeller. No need to make it more complicated.

Lucky enough to see an LA-9 at an airshow here in New Zealand earlier in the year. Outstanding plane to watch in the air.

Thanks, I'll bear it in mind! First of all, everyone has to buy up all of the first edition so the publisher will be interested in another :)

Ah no wonder, thought the tone of grey looked familiar. I have some pics somewhere of the plane at the show, I'll try dig out the pics.

At the air show it was being flown by a well renowned (sorry can't recall his name at moment)  test pilot who's flown just about every warbird around.

His comments were that it was one of the very best aircraft he's ever flown.

Great plane.

I have been to Duxford three times... not matter where you're from, you simply HAVE to go there. Had a 'tour' inside Sally B the first time and every time I'm in absolute AWE what they are restoring there and what they have in airworthy condition. Just imagine, you visit on a boring weekday, overcast sky and you see a Blenheim overhead. Unforgettable. Then you just pay your admission and wander through the hangars. Restauration in progress of a Beaufighter, Ju-52, Gladiator, a wrecked Zero in parts, just having been brought in. Fantastic.

The American air museum is awesome, B-17, B-29 and B-52 inside a massive hangar and a memorial to all American airmen who have fallen in WWII in the European theater.

And the land warfare hall is also great, with some recently acquired stuff from the Czech republic, including a Scud missile launcher.

Best moment ever was when I visited Duxford after having been to Mildenhall. Back in 2000 it was I believe. The battle of Britain memorial flight was based there for the weekend. Ever seen two Spits, a Hurricane and a Lancaster starting up their engines simultaneously?

that's a beautiful piece of engineering, putting those four guns together in a relatively small cowling.

well, noone said the russian engineers were dumb, after all :)

I'm currently a 'Friend of Duxford' and in the evenings they have special open cockpit events.  So far I've managed to climb inside a Harrier GR3, Fairey Gannet, Wessex, Sea Vixen, Wasp, F4J Phantom, F-111, B52, Huey UH-1, B-17G, JS-2M tank and several other tanks.  Hopefully I'll be getting in a few more next year! :)  (also managed to get in a Mosquito at another museum!)

Unfortunately the progress of the Beaufighter and Zero has been almost nil, along with a P-51B, oweing to other priorities.  The Blenheim also suffered a ditch a few months ago and is currently under major repair - probably be airworthy in a year or two.
