Number plates
« on: December 28, 2003, 02:57:25 PM »
Is it true that in america there is no need to have number plates (registration plates?) whatever you call them, on the front of your car?

And it is illegal to reverse into a parking space because the plate has to be on show?

heard about it a while ago and was wondering if it is true..

Thanks :)

A few states do require plates on the front and I don't know of any state that has a law against backing into a parking space, though usually only cops do it.:rofl

In the United States  ther are 30 States that require both front and rear license plates, 20 require only 1 plate on the rear of the vehicle.  On street parking in most States must be in the direction of travel meaning you must park you vehicle facing  in the direction of traffic flow.  Off street parking in lots or parking garage are usually optional on which way you park unless posted otherwise. Others may reply with local laws.

I think California had a front plate requirement for a long time but they didn't start enforcing it until they started using those stupid red light cameras.

usually it's only motels that require you park 'front-in'.  the main reason for this is that most have a seperate heating/cooling/freash-air unit for each room and if you back in your car exaust gets pumped into the rooms.

I know that MD, VA, DC (Washington) definitely require, by law, for vehicles to have license plates mounted on the front and back.

Typically won't write you a ticket, but they'll run the license to see if you have a warrant or a license(not suspended or restricted).

While that may or may not be true the real reason hotels would require one not to back it is so they can check the plate against there registered guest list.

Most hotels I've stayed at off the highway and such require you to give them the make/model/plate of the vehicle.  This is usually due to lack of total spaces.  In most cases they would tow a vehicle if it was parked there after a certain hour if the vehicle was not a customers.

just my $0.02

WI requires a front plate... but it doesn't have the renewal stickers on it.

they WILL pull you over for not having one (i got busted because i had a Packers plate there... told them i lost the original front plate and it cost me $45 to get new plates grrrrrrrrrrrr)

the "ticket" is a fix-it ticket which you have 5 days to correct the problem (like a headlight out)
I don't know what to put here yet.
