Steven Who? planes!
« on: December 30, 2003, 07:41:53 PM »
I had a chance to visit the National Air and Space Museum's recently opened Steven E. Udvar-Hazy facility at Dulles airport in DC last Sunday.  I only had about 45 minutes so I didn't have an opportunity to scour it thoroughly.

Needless to say it was a warbirder's wet dream.  I thought some of you layabout malingering pantywaists might like to get a taste of it so I dumped the snapshots to the web.

Some planes should be very familiar.

Excessive Hellkitty and Warhawk shots are for Mathman and MiniD.  I like the way they dirtied up the F4UD.  M&M owe me at least the common courtesy of a reach-around next con.

#27 is a George.  Enola Gay is the shiny one behind the Dora.  Hurricane IIC has to be one of the prettiest planes there.  Check out the Arado and the Jug.  The Japanese seaplane's mission was to be carried by sub to Panama to attack the Panama Canal.  Mighty cool.

The P38 looked like it was used extensively in operations, all dinged up and stuff.

I was surprised to see a MiG15 and 21, and the N1K2 George.

When I was at the NASM Garber restoration facility last year, the guide mentioned that they had changed their philosophy from pristine, perfect, "museum" restoration to presenting the aircraft more as they would have been in day-to-day use.

Good move, in my opinion.

Shiny is still cool, though.

You can say taint, hehe.

My bad.  Kurt tank was light in the loafers, anyway.

How did the Enterprise look up close & personal?

To me space frags are spam in a can.  Hoping upon hope you don't get blowed up on takeoff or burnt up on re-entry is no way to fly.

Leave space travel  for Spock wannabe spam-in-a-can types.

Whatsername on Challenger used to teach English.  Now she's History.

What does NASA stand for?  Need Another Seven Astronauts.

Hello Beagle?

Woof.

Ba-dum-bum.

Thank you.  I'll be here all week.  Try the veal!  The brisket's not bad either!
