Flew my first sortie today...
« on: January 04, 2004, 04:32:14 PM »
...and I SUCK!

I dropped out of flightsims in '96 after playing AW since '92 (I was one of the hated SVGA Box Game dweebs). I lost all interest right in the middle of the first WB beta and just quit altogether.

Now, 7 years later I got up in AH and I am TERRIBLE! Holy cow you can really get rusty, I mean I was never the best in AW (maybe in the top 20% skill wise, maybe) but I am horrible. The worst is my gunnery skills, I cant hit the side of a mountain over D200. Some of it is my dialup too, I have warps worse than the 1200 bps modem AW days, gonna get cable connection soon.

The nice thing is, when I started AW it cost $10 an hour, and I didnt have a local node so I added another $4 an hour long distance to that. In AH I can be a newbie dweeb for a whole month for the price of one hour back in '92. :)

Any old Air Warriors around from back then in AH? I know Pyro, I was in the AW Gunfighters squad with he and his Brother Rabid, and I saw HT occasionally.

There is a big learning curve for AH but it's worth it. ;)

Grits and my tail number was 3089. I only saw you a few times since I didnt play much until '94 because of the cost and when I did I died a quick and painless death so I wouldnt expect you to remember :).

For the first 6 months or so after they made the Real-time arena I only flew in half-time (I know, I shouldnt admit that...) and by the time I really got into the full realism arena and joined the GF's I think you were working on Confirmed Kill/Warbirds.

I miss flying with Dead Duck, Wolfman, Pyro, and Rabid vulchin in a B25/A26 Bloodpig parked behind an enema runway, or stallfighting Spits in a fully manned B17 Deathstar with Dead Duck driving and doing loops. Those were the days...

Hi Grits, welcome to AH.  I came from AW too, but didn't start playing there until 1998, long after you had left, so we never met.  I was there right until the end and have been here in Aces High ever since.  It's a steep learning curve, especially if you mainly flew in RR in AW, but well worth the effort.  Stick at it and I'm sure you'll grow to enjoy it as much as AW.  ;)

Hey Grits,

I played AW on Geni - mouse control, 512 KB 8mhz Atari ST :D
I think I was in the second graduation class of the AW training academy. We formed into the Turkey Hams if you remember them.
Our battle cry was er.... snort!

I played on and off over the years, but like you am just back after a few years off. And like you , I can't hit the side of a mountain :D
But you gota admit - the mountains are so much prettier here!

DeadDuck on vary rare occasions will drop in and fly but he can be found on the Big Week news group at news.bigweek.org.  I think even Wolfman has popped his head in BW recently and still might be lurking around in there.

Yeah, I remeber the THams, they flew in B-land right? The GF's did, I think we flew some buff missions with you guys, but its been so long ago its all kinda blurry. :) Werent the THams, the GF's, and one other squad all part of the 4th FG? Seems like they were.

Cool, I'll have to check that out. DD used to live here in Pensacola but he moved somewhere else before I got here. Whelp, looks like I now have a good reason to get a cable connection, dialup bites!

Welcome Grits  :)

As was said there are many of the Old Gods and dweebs still lurking in the shadows.    After you settle in you find a few old friends Im am sure.

Ack-Ack,   Iv been absent from Bigweek,  built a new box and never got bigweek loaded up.   I really need to get my butt back to BW.   Iv just been too busy of late.   Give everyone a hello from me.
