Comp Problem
« on: January 05, 2004, 07:27:36 PM »
Decided to post here because I dont see many people respond to technical support forum. Anyhow there seems to be a major prob with my puter. It's almost like my harddrive has wigged out. I can't do a search for any of my programs/files any more, the search window does not even show up. In the My Computer program, when i click local disk or control panel nothing shows up. I've tried to execute a system restore but that does not even come up either. So i can not delete anything which I cannot see on my desktop when first booting up my system. I'd like to view some films and screen shots i've taken but cant due to this problem. Anyone know whats up?

If you do setup windows again, it should fix it (depending on OS, works for 95 and 98). Setup your PC to boot from CD-ROM, place the Windows CD in your tray. It should automatically run the Windows setup. If possible, choose the repair option (typically its not available unless Windows is really screwed). Otherwise, choose to go ahead and overwrite the current OS. It should save all program links (meaning you don't have to reinstall any software) and will only put Windows back to default.

Thats assuming you have used an updated anti-virus program to detect any virii on your system that could be causing this problem.

Holy Christ, well thats your problem right there. Windows ME is the worst form of an aborted piece of software you'll ever find.

Beyond that, you could try setting your BIOS to "default settings" and see if that helps.

Seriously though, if the system restore was done at a point where the system was fine - you either have a virus, or your OS is totally messed up at which point specific files that weren't backed up can't be restored. (system restore relies on certain OS files not being screwed up)

If you have alot of stuff on your HD that you dont want to lose. I'd suggest getting another HD and reinstall the OS on it. Slave your old drive too the new one, check it for virurs. You show then be able to save anything that on it, if the drive isn't going to hell. After that I'd reformat the old drive.

Go to bootdisk.com for a boot disk, any OS.

When you first turn you computer on and it goes through finding the drives (Floppy drives/Hard Disk Drives/CD-ROMs) it will typically display on the bottom of the monitor "Press (something) to get into the (BIOS/CMOS)" Usually its F1 (upper most row on the keyboard) or Del (Del (on numpad) or Delete key (Typically to the right of the Enter/Return key on the keyboard).

When you get into the BIOS, you should see an option to reset to Default options (select it using the arrow keys then hitting enter) or go to Optimum options (same as the Default instructions) then save it (usually the F10 key).

You will have to reboot the PC, sometimes you have to completely shut the PC and power it up (wait atleast 15 seconds so the fans stop spinning), before you will see the message for the key to hit to get into the BIOS/CMOS.
