Beta 8
« on: January 07, 2004, 03:25:31 PM »
Specs:
1.2gHz AMD T-bird
ECS K7S5A Mobo (266 fsb :()
512 ddram (PC2700)
Windows XP
DX 9.0b
ATI Radeon 9600
Catalyst 3.7? (6.14.10.6387)

Running AH at 1280x1024, 32bit, AA=4x, AN=4x (directx).

Frame rates improved a ton.  The 9600 isn't performing in other games as it should be due to the relatively slow CPU.  However, AH2 is looking nice in the FR department at the moment.  Always room for improvement, but for a beta, its great.

Bf109G10 "feels" much better.  Like 99.999% of us flyers out there, I have no real experience in a cockpit of a 109 (outside of a museum), but I think its much better in the roll rate department.  More in a minute.

[edit]:  Flat turns tend to cause a rather fast snap roll.  IMO, it recovers too quickly.  On the deck, if I yank the stick until it snaps (for full 360 roll), then release, the 109 seems rather "easy" and forgiving.  Exiting the envelope and reentering feels rather quick and snappy.  I know the 109 is a relatively small and light a/c (compared to, say, a P47), but is this 'what is supposed to happen' or the desired effect?

Also, regarding the high-G tunnel vision:  Are there plans to "soften" the onset of the tunnel vision?  I think a slightly more gradual tunneling effect would feel better.  I haven't personally sustained high enough G forces to black "instantly" as feels the current setup.  Maybe enough time to allow for the blood to move?  A second or two lag for the tunneling effect to kick in after a high-G maneuver is initiated would be fine.

Lastly, more sounds!  The skid/ditch sound has great potential.  Screeching metal or a sound of a rough terrain landing would be great.

^ Even better, a rough running engine after slight damage?  Oil leaking and the engine runs like crap until an overall seize would rule.  [/edit]

One more thing:  The icon text and field numbers look 'bulgy' and thick.

Was online a moment ago and noticed I'm getting small studdering while typing in the text buffer.

I'd like an option for customizing the font (icons/field numbering only).

The aircraft icons below the plane are nice, but they disappear when flying near the deck or if they're actually on the ground.

Check out the explosions from the Tiger main gun and P51s' rockets.

I couldn't see any bomb explosions on my sons' FE and haven't loaded it on my ol machine yet.
Easy in-game again.

The 109, even the late models were said to be good low speed handlers, so I'm not surprised if it has good snap recovery.

Try pulling the stick way back and holding it there.

The plane snaps, stalls, recovers, stalls, recovers, stalls repeat.

So what you get is a really awkward sort of 60 degrees roll(snaproll caused by stalls), stop, roll, stop, roll, stop kind of behavior. When you release stick, it instantly regains controllability.

It's not just with the 109 - it happens to all planes.

I believe this is a desired effect .. making it harder to detect planes flying NOE as they were in RL
