Maybe one day there's a Hollywood made warmovie which is even half as good as "Das Boot".

United, you thinking of "The Enemy Below", 1956, Kurt Jurgens and Robert Mitchum, one of the best war movies of all time, where the crippled destroyer escort lured the Uboat into surfacing within ramming range and the crews of the two sinking ships cooperated to stay alive.

Had a wonderful sequence when the trapped Uboat crew, sitting on the bottom played an alleged Nazi drinking song at full volume into the DE's sonar.  I've never been able to locate an mp3 or other file of the song, "For You My Friend" and suspect it might have been written for the movie.  [edit:  Actually the tune is the march "Der Alte Dessauer" composed in 1705-  http://www.freds-world.com/stadtmusik/cd_inhalt.htm  Don't know whether the words sung in the movie were authentic to that period or not.]

Das Boot, it is:)

Well they havent realy made any real good ones for the Big Screan lately, Private Ryan was not half bad though, Howeaver Spelberg and Hank's did make The Superlative "Band of Brother's", which was far better than many of the war Movies I have ever sean....Good news fo the fans of this mini series...properdly their doing another one, this time on the Pacific Theater.
