Hmmm....I thought P-80 carry some 20mm cannon as I thought but im might be wrong for that.

The .50s were the M3 version, which fired at 1,200 rpm rather than 800 for the WW2 M2.

Mr. Williams, I've been wondering about the M2-Browning which is often quoted as 800 rouds per minute as synched values. There are people saying that it was quite often that fighters of WW2 often pushed up the M2 firing speed upto 1000~1200rpm - is this true?

I understand that it was possible to boost the RoF of the M2 by replacing the recoil buffer with a solid metal piece. However, this was decidedly unofficial as it put extra stresses on the gun, harming reliability. The official RoF remained 750-850 rpm.

The M3 looked the same as the M2, but many of the parts were changed to enable it to withstand the added firing stresses, and these were not interchangeable with the M2.

Tony, was the M3 fitted from the start, or after WW2 ? Wasn`t it (M3) introduced just after WW2 ? The first P-80s come in as early as 1944...

The M3 was standardised in April 1945 and large-scale production started, with about 2,400 guns being completed by September. I don't know how that ties in with P80 production rates, but offhand the only other early user of the M3 I can think of was the F8F Bearcat.

According to my information, the F8F-1, of which 654 were built, was armed with four .50 M3. Later models had the cannon.

765 F8F-1s were produced. One was taken and modified into the F8F-1B, which incorporated 4 x 20mm cannon. All remaining F8F-1s were armed with 4 x .50 cal MGs. F8F-2s incorporated the armament of the single F8F-1B.
