Mr Record recommends a total overhaul of the national security strategy and says it must redirect its campaign against global terror from "unrealistic to realistic war aims".

Although he says that Washington may be able to defeat al-Qaida, he concludes that its war on terror has designated so many fronts and enemies that it is fundamentally unwinnable

Meanwhile the war in Iraq has led it into an open-ended conflict that has drained resources from its efforts to secure American soil against another attack by al-Qaida

Entering into an open-ended guerrilla conflict in Iraq has drained its military and financial resources and cost the country dear in international diplomacy, the report says, while emphatically failing to advance the war on terror.

"Operation Iraqi Freedom may have expanded the terrorist threat by establishing a large new American target set in an Arab heartland," it says.

He (Dr. Record) is the author of six books, he served as a military adviser during the Vietnam war and to Republican senators, and his report was endorsed in the Washington Post by the director of the war college

First of all, the bloody media has one VERY important fact wrong:

The ARMY said no such thing. Neither did the War College.

"His essay, published by the Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute, carries the standard disclaimer that its views are those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of the Army, the Pentagon or the U.S. government. "

It was an essay. The SSI journals are FULL of independently written essays and articles, NONE of which are official doctrine or even the position of DoD or the Army.

This was ONE GUY expressing an opinion. IMHO, it's a VERY good thing for Army officers (especially at military schools where free thinking "outside the box" is encouraged) to think .. and even write .. such things.

Hey, he didn't criticize the President (directly). He didn't criticize his commander(s) (directly). He stated an opinion, an interesting point of view.

His opinion.

The coincidence that maybe a VERY large percentage of senior military officers might agree with him .. hey, that's something the Administration has to deal with.

But neither the Army nor the War College said anything at all .. except to disclaim this as the individual's opinion.

Bidda-boom, bidda-bing.

No they dont. A guest professor or whatever critizises Bush. The army war college has repeatedly said that the views of the guest professor are his alone, and does in no way represent the views of the army or the war college.

At least the post got their headline right, though still a bit inflammitory:

But the director doesn't totally distance himself, or the college either, does he?

"This piece of work, like many others, certainly should be considered in the debate being taken place on national security policy," the institute's director, retired army colonel Douglas Lovelace, said.

He said it had "a fairly strong foundation of support among the academic faculty". "

And from here.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A8435-2004Jan11.html

"But retired Army Col. Douglas C. Lovelace Jr., director of the Strategic Studies Institute, whose Web site carries Record's 56-page monograph, hardly distanced himself from it. "I think that the substance that Jeff brings out in the article really, really needs to be considered," he said. "
...

"Many of Record's arguments, such as the contention that Saddam Hussein's Iraq was deterred and did not present a threat, have been made by critics of the administration. Iraq, he concludes, "was a war-of-choice distraction from the war of necessity against al Qaeda." But it is unusual to have such views published by the War College, the Army's premier academic institution."
...

"Record, a veteran defense specialist and author of six books on military strategy and related issues, was an aide to then-Sen. Sam Nunn when the Georgia Democrat was chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

In discussing his political background, Record also noted that in 1999 while on the staff of the Air War College, he published work critical of the Clinton administration."

Here is a link to the actual essay if anyone wants to move beyond the headline bickering to read it.

Oh because you think the might be a "MacNamara's 'wiz kid'", he has no credability at all?  Even thought you don't actually have a feaking clue wether he is or isn't?

LOL.  If I were you I wouldn't be talking about credibility after a statement like that.,

When a visiting professor at the War College who used to be employed by a Democrat in the senate writes an essay I would be suprised if he wasn't critical of Bush!!!!
