Twisty stick vs. pedals
« on: January 16, 2004, 11:43:22 AM »
Hi,

I have a twisty stick right now, and it works well except sometimes I start appling the rudders unintentionally, especially in a tight T&B.  How do pedal rudders stack up against twisty stick?

Thanks

To put it Jr High terms: Rudder Pedals RULE, Hoopty Twisty Sticks SUCK!

For exactly the reason you stated.  If you switch, it'll definitely take a little getting used to, but once you do you'll never want to switch back.

Rudder pedals are definately better than a twisty stick.  The problem is, it's very tough to go from a twisty stick to rudder pedals.  It takes a couple of months to get the feel for the pedals, and to stop trying to twist your stick off the desk.

it'd be just as easy to crank up your deadband and damper on the rudder axis to tweak out minor twists.

having said that, and having used both pedals and twisty, pedals are a lot more intuitive and provide finer control over a twisty.

i use a twisty now, pedals in storage and gameport, stick usb... need to find some usb pedals or go here,

Do you guys recommend rudder pedals that slide along tracks or that depress from the heels (i.e., connected at heel and pushed down by ball of foot)?

Which brands?

I used some heel pedals before but have come to prefer the twisty for less fuss and clutter.

Do any real planes use twisty sticks instead of rudders?

Are most real plane rudders on tracks or depressed from the heels?

Recommend CH type pedals.

Have used TM Elites and CH and CH are, for me, much better!

The slider type I have, had to be steadied some how or the entire assembly would move.  Springs are too strong.  The CH took a little gettin used to after the TM Elites, but are easier and don't need to be tied down.  Mine are just CH pedals and not the Pro version with toe brakes.

But when I manuver I only get deflection when I want it and not by accident.

Just up the deadband for the rudder.

I'd perhaps work with the scaling a bit also. Step the first 4 up slowly, then march the last 5 quckly up to the top.

Give it a try, costs you nothing but a half hour of time.

There are no real life airplanes (afaik, never heard of it anyway) that use some kind of twisty stick or similair. Rudders remain rudders and should be controlled by your feet and nothing else. As a real life pilot I much prefer the pedals.

There are two different kind of pedals, those that you said, slide along a track (you move the whole pedals forward and back). This is the way real airplanes have it and it also gives better stability and aim, second, it's far less load on your feet to just rest your feet on the pedals and use your legs to push them.
The other kind of pedals are the "car" pedals, you move the pedals like car pedals more or less, example of such pedals are CH Pedals (not PRO, PRO are both plane and car mode).

If you do decide for a pair of pedals, DO NOT GO for CAR MODE only pedals, it sucks in everything but car games.

Huge difference in my aiming and acm with pedals. Barrel rolls make sense now :-). Will not go back. If you're not a real pilot and just a wanna be (like me) ---- the pedals add a lot more to this game in how I can maneuver the sim aircraft. I used the twisty stick before that and I assure you the difference was worth the cost.

I used the CH Pro pedals --- they are usb.

Rudders absolutely.  Twisty rudders cannot be avoided when in the heat of battle.

I had two types of rudder pedals in the past, TM slideing pedals, and the CH car type pedals. I had to nail the TM pedals to the floor to keep them from moving (that went over real big). I still had problems keeping them centered though. I didn't like the car type pedals at all. After giving away two sets of pedals, I'm hesitant to buy another set. I'm trying a setup where I use the x axis of another joystick for the rudder, as I was having the same problem of inadvertant rudder movements in combat. I tried setting the deadband way up on the twisty stick, but it made it harder to finely control the rudder even after setting the the first 5 bands close together.

The second rudder stick is going to take some getting used to, but the fine control is there, and it adds some more buttons and another hat. It also was a lot cheaper than pedals. I think there were some real life planes controlled with a rudder stick. I saw a design for a homemade rudder stick on a website, and I remember it mentioning a historical plane that used one - dunno if it was a combat plane.

Anyway, thats another option, and probably a great option for anyone who has problems with their legs. The drawback is not being able to use the rudder and throttle at the same time, but I have yet to find that a problem.

Wilbus, what do you fly in RL? I flew gliders for a few years (gave up because of the generally crap British weather) and then flew small powered civil types for a total of 16 years. IMO, rudder pedals belong in real planes, and twisty sticks are for games. I prefer the convenience of a twisty, but Hawk made a good point...

Indeed. Sometimes I found that my stick had got turned around on the desk, and I'm flying with full right rudder. :lol
