question about squads...
« on: January 24, 2004, 05:32:00 PM »
I see many squads with historical names etc..

just wonder how many actually stick to designation, ie naval squad stick to naval planes, lw to german etc...

just my opinion....but if you claim a historical squad name why fly every other plane?

sorta reduces the honor of the original rl squads doesn't it?

I mean fly what you wish, just why choose historical squad at that point?

just wondering

some squads fly the historically correct planes just on squad nights .I dont thing any squads make you fly the same plane for the whole tour.

in my AH squad we have plane/s of the month that we fly on squad nights .

in my FA squad we flew the historical planes on squad nights .

the squad i am in fly the 38 almost exclusively.  i would venture to say >90% of the time we are in 38s.  gotta mix it up every now and then tho.  how else would you get rid of perks.  :)

In VF-17 our main ride is the F4U series. Since there isn't a F4U-1A in the game with the bubble canopy we fly them all. We do fly other aircraft as the game dictates depending on what is needed to take part in the CT or a specific part of base capture in the MA.

As for "sorta reduces the honor of the original rl squads doesn't it?" comment...I seriously doubt any real life historical squadron members really care what plane we fly in this game or any other.

The Nomads are a fairly old squad, started in AW among a bunch of gents that didn't take themselves too seriously and liked to fly together. We were primarily a P38 squad at that time, but it was mostly because the majority of the gents were good at it when they joined up.

From what +Tiff/Slack has told me the Nomads were a P40 squad in Africa, that orginally flew them off of a CV deck to ferry them to the fields.

As for me? I fly a double engine P40. :D

As for reducing the 'honor' of the real squads- if you fly with a sense of fair play, treat the other gents in the game with respect, and remember what your fore-fathers have done- how can you disrespect the original flyers?

I work in a hospital and I told a B17 pilot that had been admitted for end stage prostate cancer with 'mets' to the bone about Airwarrior. He was unimpressed, remarking (paraphrase) 'We lost good guys so this generation could make fun of it?'

It got me thinking and we continued to talk. He was deeply impressed by the scenarios and I'd often bring in screen shots of the scenario we were doing at the time. I'd tell him what happened while he sat there, staring at the pictures, with an alternating smile/introspective look on his face. From his expression, I know he felt alot more relieved that no one's sacrifice was being forgotten by these scenarios.

III/Jabostaffel flies only german planes (except the last week of each quarter for fun.. march, june, sept, dec).

it does get frustrating to see a person in a squad with for example a real german name land kills in a p51. just not right imho.

there's a guy with the name of a very famous LW commander in AH but he only flies F4u's. whats that about???

oh well another post to ignore, or my 2¢, or a lame thought by yours truly, or whatever you make of it.
I don't know what to put here yet.

Well JB73 get your history right first before starting off down other lines of thought.

Willi Reschke was not a "LW Commander". He was an "Oberfeldwebel" who was picked to be in Stab JG301 but he has become famous in the flight simulation world for flying an aircraft; that if you want to believe the myth could have helped change the air war had it been built in numbers earlier and without results of bombing. Part of his famous nature is for a quote he has that states the following once translated from German..."The Ta152 was my life insurance in the last days of the war.".

Now about why I have this ID in the game and on the BBS. I was a member of an all LW squadron (non historical btw but went by LJK) for a few years and I used this name there after I got away from using LJKSix. I haven't changed it in AH because I just haven't and don't intend on it unless someone else starts paying my $15 a month. Once someone pay's and keeps on paying it then I will change it.

Actually when we came up with the name it was only because we'd decided to fly for whatever country had the lowest numbers.  Being Nomadic from country to country.

But as it turned out there was/is a Fighter Group in the USAAAF/USAF that is called the Nomads.  They were/are the 33rd Fighter Group that uses F15s now but during WW2 flew into North Africa off an escort carrier in P40s.  They lasted in the Med until Sicily and then moved to China Burma India flying first P40s then Jugs then P38s.  As far as I know they were the only US Fighter Group to see combat  in both Europe and the Pacific.

And Delirium is right.  It's the scenarios where the history gets played out.  The old AW scenarios were as much fun in the newsgroups as in the flying as the history would really get going as people got into the historical feel of the squads they were representing.

I really miss that

The 339th flies the P-51D 99% of the time.  The 339th was a late war squad that was only activated for the last 13 months of the war.

We do not enforce anything on our friends, neighbors, and squad members.  We love the history, but are about FUN!

Strange or maybe not so.....our members just seem to fly the P-51D.

Thanks for asking,

367th of AH was the 367th of WB, where we flew '38s alot
( 367th was based in ETO and flew P-38j's till they ran out
then were Issued P-47's)

Squad fly's the 38 and 47 in here, but not as much,
however we are all aware of the History and Actions of the real 367th "Dynamite Gang"

We actually contacted thier Vetrans group and asked to use name.
they seem to like us and have provided some great
nose art pics, etc etc for us

Why dont we fly thier A/C all the time?
Well its a game

Some good reading below of thier History if intrested

We are a Heavy Bomber Squadron and take pride in it.  I know that the bragging rights are in the fighter aspects of the game, but we take pride in being able to fly a formation of buffs to a target and level it completely.
