Ecke, you seem like a nice, reasonable guy, but you seem to not get the point. You typed shiit with two i's - why? Certainly because you knew spelling the word correctly wouldn't be acceptable. You knew it but chose to use the word anyway. So far no big deal, but when the moderator cautioned you, you continued using the German spelling. Ordinarily the German version wouldn't be noticed, but you were doing it to spite the moderator. That's why you got muted and why HiTech would have ejected you... which means you would no longer be allowed to play AH. Players must not argue with or do things to spite the moderators, because that would cause them to lose control.

Bottom line... wether you agree or not, HTC does not allow players to say some things. If they do, they get a notice so they can avoid doing it in the future. AH is an American game sold by an American company. If they choose to filter English words only, likely because that's about all they can handle, it's their choice. I've been involved with games that would not permit masked words either, that had a lot more moderators than AH. They were strict! It's true that a lot worse gets said than shiit every day, but there is not always moderators available, or they may have muted others without your knowledge.

Just be thankful that you didn't run into HiTech that night... he can be meaner than shiit! >=o)

Then there was the guy that had a profane handle, everyone that "check-6"'d him was getting a warning.

No question..i got what i deserved. Dont mess with the mod. My fault. as i said above.
I used these 10 minutes of silence for a little meditation:)
As it is now, the mods are nothing more than a optimized spam filter. Filtering out only the bad words and their mutilatings.
But as long as everyone can read really bad violation on ch1, the mods dont work propperly.
And i dont believe that this violation only happens when the mod is OFFLINE.
As HT said above, the mods dont make the rules. HT makes the rules and the mods execute HT's rules.
And so, i would like to see that HT defines a few more rules which allows the mods to keep the chat more readable and enjoyable.

I don't have any problem with profanity, hate I have much more trouble with.

Ecke, you shouldn't have taunted the moderator and although you say it's not a big deal, you still took the time to post and to reply. Rules are rules. Just don't get worked up for a profanity warning and swear in German without explaining. I'll be perfectly able to understand what you mean :D

I live in the Netherlands and here everything is allowed. English is very well integrated in our society and all teenagers know exactly what the F-word means (and a lot more). Over here it would be UNTHINKABLE to mute or beep movies on TV or to do so with Eminem records on the radio.  We hear it all and hardly anyone seems to bother.

To me it is amusing (and sometimes even annoying) to listen to UK TV or radio and miss out half the lyrics of a Limp Bizkit song.

This really is a difficult issue. Cultural values and morals are different, not only across the globe, but within countries, on your street or even in your own house.

I can also appreciate the argument that bigotry is more offensive than words that depict body parts or bodily functions. Why in the world is one word for a body part 'offensive' and a synonym 'unoffensive?' How does one asterick make something unoffensive? Is racial taunting acceptable if one uses an asterick here or there?

I suppose the answer is that AH is not a society with values that are debatable. There are no elected representatives or constitution and no rights are granted to you. It is a private enterprise that you may choose to participate in, or choose not to participate in.

Just as some choose not to offend others and some relish offending others.

It is just another lesson in how the world operates and the 'Golden Rule' - The man with the gold makes the rules. :)

Whats so hard about NOT offending with "Swearwords" masked or not? Lets give it a try ;)

What I find amazing here, is that what is self evident to most is beyond the grasp of  a few.

If what an individual wants is the freedom to voice their opinions or remarks in a profane, vulgar, disrespectful and/or harassing manner, then that is certainly their choice.

However, it is not their right to inflict this "right" on the community at large. If you need a forum to do this, it ain't here.
Go somewhere else.

It's a pretty basic concept really. Go ask your Mother, I am sure she would be more than willing to re-explain it to you.

Okay..now I really am out.

cheers,

I was just about to renew my subscription when I saw this thread.

I won't pay to be censored, even by mistake. I fully reckognise the need for monitoring with half-brained youngsters online.. But to be warned / muted even when joking with someone (happened a lot without even realising back when I joined MA) really is a PITA and forces one to constantly monitor ones typing in order to avoid any accidental 'profane' word. Like cockpit.

AH lacks freedom of expression. The guidelines are set by the random decisions of the moderators, who sometimes run high on a powertrip and the result is similar.

So untill automatic filtering and random mutings are removed from MA you won't see me as a customer.

AH lacks freedom of expression

Blahahahaha!  You're darned right it does.  It is not a public venue, it is a private business,  so why should it have freedom of expression?  And you have undoubtedly a twisted sense of the term.  Go to a  public park, find some kind of youth organization event... say a soccer game.  Stand in their midst and start cursing and screaming obsceneties.  You'll find yourself either beaten to a pulp by the parents(self policing) or you'll find your self facing an officer(s) citing you for whatever the local law proscribes.  i.e. disturbing the peace, lewdness... etc. Why should AH be different?

Your idea of freedom of expression is a bit warped, sir.

I was once warned to "please watch the language" by a mod, so I very creatively chose my words, typed "eat fecal matter" . Now not a single word in my sentence was vulgar or obscene, but together...... could be. Yes I got muted.

Its alot like driving California freeways, EVERYONE speeds, but the cops can only have just so many tickets in that lil book.& theres waaaaay more speeders than tickets.

For me, its fun to push the boundaries from time to time, both on Ch1 & on the freeway.

I say what I feel, I drive how I want. I can deal with the penalties if/when i'm caught.

What's difficult about it? A cop in some country you are visiting tells you, "Don't do that." and you do it anyway. Then he pops you a good one in the noggin. Nothing difficult at all.

No great loss. I doubt you will be missed, since you were obviously muted most of the time you were here :D.
