pwned

MEANING:
The past tense of the word "pwn," which means "to kick the bellybutton of (an opponent)."

HISTORY:
Contrary to popular belief, "pwned" did not originate in Warcraft. A top Quake player mispelled "owned" and the term quickly spread to less players and eventually to nearly the entire population of online gamers. The word is usually used in online FPS and RTS games.

USAGE:
Pwned is often said to an individual's lesser opponent after the greater person or team has defeated his enemy.

Can also be used when verbal superiority is shown in an arguement, for instance, on a video or computer game message board/forum.

"My archers pwned your wyvern, noob."

"Clan AIC just pwned you mother ****ers."

(After delivering a perfect arguement):
"PWNED ***** GGTHNXNORE"

It is no longer the "english" language.  It is american.

Some of it good, some of it bad, but always changing.

Its new to me.  I didn't see it on a regular basis until I started hanging out on the AH boards.  It probably has its origination in the video game community.

According to Pfunk, that's exactly where it originates. The cap fits, perfectly, and Rude probably still has a callous on his middle finger from playing PacMan. :lol

I thought owned was a surf thing (own the wave), then pwned came from early fps's (which had to be multiplayer, and have a chat bar so that the misspelling could occur).

If you're standing in a jail cell, and the big man says I owned you boy, does he mean:

1.)  The act of defeating another player in a computer game.  Please lets finish our game of online chess, it's my move?

2.)  Used to add more kick to a comeback.  On his left forearm is a tatoo, "I got life, I will own...all of you"?

3.)  To have or hold as property.  Or, your bellybutton is mine sucka?

Like everything else, language is always changing.

One of the most serious problems is the confusion caused by totally reversing  meanings, e.g., "bad" as "good" (That's bad, man -- admiring a new jacket).

This is a traditional objection to slang, the most danger being when a new generation comes along and has no idea what the local meaning was back then.

Hence history even in the same language becomes a confusing ordeal of trying not only to interpret but translate "what the captain meant to say."
