I have installed the google toolbar, it has blocked 1 pop-up.  I am getting other pop-ups all the time.  I am going to try the yahoo one.  I have windows xp fully updated and see no pop-up blocker in IE.

I see a ton of options at download.com, but they all cost money.

any more options?

are these internet explorer popups or are they windows message like popups?

I haven't seen a single popup -- not one-- since I installed google toolbar which makes me think you are getting windows messages and not popups..

By chance it's not a box that you have to click OK to get ride of is it?

Have you disabled the messenger service?

It really sounds like you have spyware on your PC because, my google popblocker has blocked well over 700 popups in 2 months.

How about this one: whenever I start IE in my brother's computer, it has some kind of link page as a homepage. Nothing obscene or anything, but everytime I change the homepage in options, and restart, this same page is back as the homepage. Any ideas?

Also, IE has a nasty tendency to lock up and seems to be running slower. When I open the favourites menu and click the link for the Aces High BB, not only does it go to this BBS, but it opens another window with the main HTC site in it (including the animationed intro). Bizarre.

Running XP Pro, fully patched up and PC-cillin firewall/antivirus software.

Run the Adaware.  Possibly Spybot too.  Each picks up things that the other doesn't.


It's spyware that keeps setting the homepage.

Goto MSCONIFG --> Startup

You'll probably find the offending application there...

Ad-aware or spybot will help you get rid of it.

I've noticed a number of different sites that are running some sort of applet, MSNBC, CBS and others. The page appears to just lock up for a minute or more. Can't close it, can't do anything with it all, but eventually whatever it is loads and then the page behaves. It's irritating.

Yeah... there's a nasty one called NetPal or something like that... Every few weeks or so, I'm forced to clean my children's machines of all the stupid stuff they allow to be installed.

Really?  What operating system are they running?  If they're running Windows 98 or Millenium, that makes sense, but if they are running XP or Windows 2000, you can give them a non-administrator account so they can't install programs.  It's a good way to keep the system intact, they don't have access to break stuff.

Its probably java kicking in, you might try going to java.sun.com and updating if you haven't in a while...

I noticed a slowdown and realized that I hadn't installed JVM at all after a re-install.

It's 98. It's okay though... if it gets too broken, I just wipe the drive. :)
