Author Topic: Mystery Airport JFK 075 / 10 nm (Read 1055 times)

OK, so i've flown over this airport at least a dozzen times, and as many maps as i've looked at as far back as a 1979 New York Sectional, I could find no record for what airport it was. Its not Grumman Bethpage because thats off the Kennedy 075 at 15. This one is 075 at 10 nm. You can clearly see the footprint for the airport which now looks to be an industrial park of some sort, but much of the runway appears intact. Any ideas what it could be?

That looks great Wolf. Where is the Mega Scenery link? I'd buy it.

Ding, I have FS9 Maxed out on a Geforce FX card, 1800, 1GIG. It just says 20 fps limited, not sure why, didn't care to change it as it's glass.

Ah there is a Frame rate slider in the hardware tab... It usually picks the best for your video card.

I like to see what other people are getting and compare them to mine.

On average, except in thick clouds I'm locked about 35 FPS. But near lots of clouds I drags into 15-18.

There are some clouds that are downloadable that are better performers but the true 3-d clouds are just too nice to replace, IMHO.

Just bought Carenado's Bonanza (the old) and love it... Can't wait for the FS2004 update comes out.

Hmm, I'd have to dig into the settings, because maybe a set 20fps would be your best bet. I don't play it enough to know, but it does look terrific on the new GF card.

If you find a Tomahawk plane with a realistic cockpit, please post it. I've found some FS2002 models but the cockpits are off.

Wolf - I was thinking about getting that scenery - are you happy with it, any frame rate loss?

Creamo - I've got my FPS locked at 50 but unless it's clear, I usually wind up with a max of 35. Clouds rain and especially snow cause a hit.

P4, 2.4, 512, ATI 9700..

There are lots of nice freeware a/c out there- one of the best IMHO is the Aero Commander from Milton Shupe (sp)

I'm sorry. That is not Roosevelt Field.

What your looking at is the remains of runway 23/05 of Mitchel Field.

How do I know this?

My office building sits dead smack in the middle of that photo!!!

I've been studying the history of this area for some time.

I also volunteer at the Cradle of Aviation Museum which was built in the hangars of Mitchel field, which can be seen in this photo as well.

Finally, about 2 months ago, I went exploring that old runway/taxiway. It seems its used for some type of driver training for Nassau county now.

As Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Feild in Mineola, and this airport is in Mineola, and Roosevelt Feild Shopping Center is in the far left (NW) corner of the airport, Roosevelt Raceway can be seen in the NE corner, just accross Meadowbrook Parkway, you can understand my confusion.

Sure looks like Roosevelt Feild to me.

Negative.

Mitchel Field was named as such in 1918 for Mayor John Mitchel of NY. Before that, it was known as Aviation Field no.2.

Roosevelt field was named for Quentin Roosevelt, son of Teddy Roosevelt, IIRC. Prior to that, it was known as Aviation Field #1.

Though these airfields are literally within 1 mile of each other, they were 2 seperate entities with 2 very distinct histories.

As far as I know, nothing remains of Roosevelt Field (The airfield, not the mall).
