He specialized in concocting drinks containing Absinth(or absinthe) even though apparently it was illegal in China as well. Anway, he mixed the stuff with burning sugar and dripped the resulting caramel into the shot before serving it, and the stuff was green. I'm not sure why I put the 'E' on the end of it, but it may have had something to do with the way Lost Generation writers used to spell it.

Thanks for the note though. I wasn't aware of the differences.

The brit's like Absinth.... and he prepared it corretly ....classicly anyway ... so it proably was real .. just wanted to give you a heads up ...I've run into a few people who pay'd too much for fake absinth :)

the two best ways to drink absinth IMHO is... with the sugar ritual... or  red bull, absinth, and vodka :D

Maybe it's me, but I like the taste once it's been 'watered' down :D

I dunno what the brand was, but the vodka they were using at the free happy hour at the Mini-con kinda reminded me of Absolute.  And I'm sure that was the cheapest stuff they could get their hands on.  I felt fine the next day, except for the sore butt.  Mini-d and Pongo said it must've fallen off the couch during the night.  I was too drunk to remember. :(

Interesting. Will definitely try it next time I come across a bottle of Popov or something else bottled in up State NY.

My personal favorite is and always will be stoli, though.

Hehehe...nasty stuff indeed :)

First time I ever got drunk was on an Explorer Scout camping trip, we'd smuggled along a case of Schlitz beer and a quart of sloe gin. It made for an interesting high. (Chug the bottle, chase with beer!)

This was many years ago, when portable radios were still a novel enough item we called 'em "transistor radios" and "made in japan" was a joke. Some ******* wouldn't change his transistor radio from the country station to rock and roll, so in my drunken rage I took it from his dumb bellybutton and threw it in the camp fire, LOL!

At least I was smart enough to position my sleeping bag so that I was facing downhill ;)

Wormwood also causes neat things like renal failure.  Buy Everclear, skip the wormwood placebo effect, and have a nice drunk.  :)

I concur, Mescal is pretty gnarly. There was one drink I remember drinking in Lhasa (Capitol of Tibet) that came out of a plastic bottle very closely resembling the same sort of canister you that Hydrogen Peroxide comes on, only white and with a red cap. The stuff had originated in Mongolia and tasted like total prettythang. Still, for some reason, I just can't get over the black licorice. Even expensive Sambuca makes me want to vomit.

Also, Thorns, did you know that Havre De Grace almost became our nation's capitol way back in the day? Amazing.

If you are drinking vodka in Moscow - never buy Stoly. You can get a bottle of fake poison. Just try almost anything that is over 80-100 rubles ($3-4) per halflitre, and enjoy.

Worst drink ever - cheap fake porto, like "three axes" ("777") or "Kavkaz". Now they make it from hydratated spirit, tap water and candies. If you want some decent strong wine - get Crimean staff from Ukraine.

Oh, forgot about fake brandies. They used to make them from hydratated spirit, tap water, boiled onions for colour and vanillin for "flavour".

Thirsty wasn't the word I'd choose. Sober was more like it.

Hehe, GIN. Makes me sick.
Did you ever try "Fernet Branca"? That's even worse, but good for your stomach.
And in the Aquavit department try Icelandic "Brennivin", gawk...

Gin
 is unredeemably nasty.

Campari is nasty, tastes like italian cologne, but it goes down in the end.

Some cheap bellybutton wal-mart generic rum I got here a couple months ago- again it went down in the end, and stayed down, thats what counts.

Black Velvet Scotch.

Walgreens Tamoshanter or Tartan or whatnot Scotch in the 1,5l jug
