Engine oil hit idea.

When your engine oil is hit, the oil will flow over your entire aircraft (that's obvious) Wouldn't the oil block your visibility on your windshield? I mean, it will surely come all over the window, that's for sure! In reall live it would stop all forward visibility (or you'll have to make a pitstop for cleaning up..)

..and some planes had a simple system to spray fuel to the windshield in order to clean it...

Now how effective such devices were?

Pappy boyington (when he was going for his high score in a F4u), got an oil ping.  It spattered all over his windshield.

So he opened up the cockpit, unbuckled and tried to physically wipe the oil off.

I wonder if he ended the war missing a hand...

You guys are mentioning exceptions. In the game B-17 (we all know that one) the windshields black out when the oil is hit (and we all know it's a pretty realistic game)

The fuel spraying is no exception. Bf 109 had it. I seem recall seeing a reference to it for the Fw 190 as well.

Well the game B-17 didn't had it (the 109 would still black out)
But that could be a fault of the game tho :)
It would be cool tho, since planes acn still fly on unharmed for like, 2-5 minutes before the oil-pressure is totally gone. That gives more then enough time to land it or to shoot an attacker down. Shouldn't there be more problems with loosing oil pressure? (Or doesn't it affect the performance untill the engine shutts down??)

Basically the situation is almost the same as with a car. If you start losing oil for some reason you do not necessarily notice it until it has run out and the oil pump is not fed anymore and you notice the oil pressure sinking. By then it is too late to do anything but stop the engine to prevent further damage. Let the engine run without the oil pressure and within ten seconds you have fatal damage or even a mechanical explosion if the engine is under extreme load.

I don't think a fighter a/c had a fully pressurized oil system rather than a sump system. Or did it?
