Author Topic: Can't access daughter's PC across the network (Read 342 times)

Two PCs, wireless network, WinXP Pro all around.

PC1 - Daughter's PC, she's administrator.
PC2 - Public PC, she has a user level account on that computer.

User name and password the same on both PCs.

Simple file sharing turned off on both PCs.

From PC1, she can access the shared folders she has access to on PC2 no problem. Login is required, but other than that, slick as snot.

From PC2, she can SEE PC1, but the ONLY login allowed is "guest" - it does not let us enter in a different user name, it is greyed out. But she has "guest" disabled on her system (like I have it disabled on all systems).

Any idea what is causing us to not be able to enter in another user in the login dialog on PC2 when trying to access the shared folders in PC1?

I am no expert but would you not have to have different usernames and passwords on the two puters?

Thats the way I have mine and It works fine.
Just a thought.

BB! Do you have a firewall like Zone Alarm? The host PC's ZA settings may need to be modified.

The username has to exist on both computers. MrBlack, if you are interested in learning more about XP filesharing - most of the basics are covered here: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm

No internal firewalls - only the router.... Though.... you know.... Maybe the WinXP firewall is defaulted to "on" on the daughter's PC. Will have to check, though I don't think so, since the firewall makes it tough to connect to other computers in general. And she can see/connect to the rest of the computers fine from her computer. She just can't get access to her computer from the other computers.

Simple, She's the local admin on her PC, and not on the other. The context of the account are different. If you don't want to make her and admin then she'll have to map it :
net use * \\computername\sharename /user:herpc\herADMINaccount password

or use the map network drive option and choose connect with a different name.
