B17 skin, problems
« on: February 13, 2004, 12:03:51 PM »
This skin does not seem to have been designed with reskinning in mind. There are 4 main problem areas, for the external skin.

1/ Lack of tailplane under-surfaces being rendered, this immediately precludes reskinning in olive drab/grey, although if there are plans to model the B17F perhaps this could be sorted there?

2/ "Shadowing" of olive drab on engine nascelles. Why? Looks awful and just increases difficulty of colour matching in the event of trying to render nascelles without those darker  patches. It doesn't even properly cover the areas it should.

3/ Starboard upper wing, reuse of tail-fin squadron marker "L", the rivet lines can either match the tailfin or the wing, not both. This look pretty nasty, and means that if the tailfin is optimised to make the wing look better then the tail-fin looks poor and vice versa. Same problem arises with the US "star and bar" on the fueslage and port wing.

Both the stars and the squadron markings would have been much more flexibly implemeted useing a seperate bitmap and corresponding alpha.bmp containing distinct images for the tailfin and wing squadron insignias, and for the stars and bars for fueslage and wing respectively.

I do not think the waist-gunners compartment is particularly convincing either, emphasising as it does the external polygon shape, rather than giving the impression of a circular section fueslage. Whilst I can see considerable amount of work into this, it really is pretty sub-standard compared both with other AH2 planes, and more importantly with other online games.

Not very auspicious given that this is the cutting edge of AH2?
