Not convinced by the results, I entered some of the word pairs into the Word spell checker (Language set to UK English). It appears that at least two pairs (ones I got wrong) have alternative spellings...

Now whereas in the UK we are broadminded enough to accept that alternative spellings exist, the American author of this test has the temerity to suggest that the English spelling in some cases is wrong, and does not even consider it as an alternative. I attribute this to typical American arrogance.

The others were words I never need to use. After all, when am I going to anoint anything? :lol

I agree, I remember looking up words in a dictionary after spelling in elementary to find out I was right da teacher was from France..

hehe, was only speaking tongue in cheek when I said about American arrogance. ;):p Had hoped to hook a few. The bait must be getting old. :D

Daniel! You're fine. I wish I could speak Spanish (or Catolan) as well as you speak English.

Oh, and Ripsnort -

But Ripsnort, did you cheat? I am still puzzled by the fact that you could do so well in a test containing some difficult and obscure words, and then spell the word "snipped" incorrectly. I would have thought that you of all people, having "completed your family", would have got that one right. :lol

Four wrong if you accept the proper Queen's English spellings. :) But then I had the strictest teacher in the world from ages 8 - 11 years old. It was like being in the 19th century, but he was the best teacher I ever had. Made us learn 20 new words every day, and then test us on them at the end of every week. Did a lot of shouting, but was very encouraging when you did well.

lol Never thought about that. :)

He was an old fashioned Yorkshire Gentleman. Used to wear tweed suits with a flat cap and a watch on a chain. Used to teach us about local heritage, culture and history. There aren't many of his kind around sadly.

Ironically, his name was Mr. Flower. :D
