talk about a ****** to get insurance.
If you want to buy a Citation 501 (Citation I/SP) arguably the easiest civil jet to fly, you need 3000-4000 hrs total time and lots and lots (25-50 hrs) of training each year and you still have a $25,000 - $75,000 or more premium if you want to go single pilot.
Citation
-350 ktas, right around $600-$800 direct operating cost per hour
F/A-18
-1500 knots True Airspeed, lots more per hour. exponential even.
Going on speed alone...$125,000 to $200,000 each year for insurance. I'm sure, however, you can find a retired Navy or Marine aviator with lots of hours in type who will be happy to make $75,000 or so a year giving you joyrides to your hearts delight.
But then again, the guy or gal buying themselves a Hornet are not the type of folks who worry about a miniscule 200 grand.
Now I've flown (and landed) a Citation V Ultra and that was the highest performance airplane I've flown to date. I can only imagine the kick in the pants a Hornet would be to take just one joyride in, let alone own my own.
I'd say even though you're spending $5,000,000 or more to own and operate your new Navy Kitplane...its worth it. If you've got the bread. I'm going to sleep now
