Okay, so it was 11/11/00 that these two events took place, fill in the blanks:

This aircraft raised the international speed record to 379.39 MPH on Nov. 11th, 1937.

Answer__________________

On Nov.12th, 1944, this type of aircraft used by the British had their armour stripped and internal gas tanks added and attacked a German battleship in the Norwegian fjord of Tromso, dropping 12,000 lb Tallboy bombs to sink her...what was the type of aircraft_________ and what was  the name of the ship?____________

I thought it too simple!  Gonna have to dig for better material!

The 109 was a Bf 109 V13 (R variant?)

The R stood for record .. and it was a 209 .. they only claimed it was a 109 for propaganda reasons .. but rather it was a completely different aircraft which sole purpose was to break the speed record.

What?!?  The Nazi party lying to the world to  benefit them for propaganda reasons?  Say it isn't so!

Seriously, what are your source for that?  I'd like to read it.

Found this in the Great Book of WWII AIrplanes:
"The Bf109 V12 and V13(the last of the original pre-production prototypes) were also originally fitted with the DB600A. The V13 aircraft was later re-engined with the new and more powerful DB601 and was the aircraft which set the world airspeed record for land based aircraft in November, 1937. Covering a 3-km(1.86mile) straight course twice in both directions, the Bf109V13 was clocked at an average airspeed of 610.5km/h(379.38MPH)."

AND the first Me209 didn't get into the air until 12 May 1939. Almost a year after the world speed record. The 209 was designed solely for an attempt on the world absolute speed record. The 209V1 got into the air until August 1938 and succeeded in raising the record to 469.22MPH (755,11km/h) on 26 April, 1939....

The Complete Book of Fighters... I kinda paraphrased it but it's all there.

Juzz, I think the plane your talking about was a heavily modified F8F Bearcat that took the speed record and holds it to this day for fastest piston engine plane, I think.
