the bad sorties and the good sorties
« on: August 22, 2000, 07:33:00 PM »
everyone has crappy sorties either a lot or a little where you just screw up in stupid ways or even if you play it right and still get bagged bounced or outnumbered miss all yer shots and get maimed. lonewolfing or flying with your wingman or squad you cant get a break.

then there are those sorties that are rare even for seasoned veterans where the enemy just puts himself in the line of fire of your bullets and even when grossly outnumbered and all alone you destroy all of your attackers and return to base unharmed. or perhaps you and your wingman or squad are just in the zone and no matter what the enemy does and no matter how many of them there are they are going down if they get anywhere near you and your wingy(s)

I love the good sorties and wish I had them more often
but the bad ones make the good ones even more gratifying

Fester was my in game name until September 2013

Right on Cit!

I remember I went into a furball once, about 5 planes on each side.  I got 4 kills hehe, the "zone" is a good place to be.  Very next sortie I die 5 seconds into the fight   The "zone" can be a hard place to stay in...

You seem awfuly optimistic today Cit..

I agree with you. Its the alignment of the stars or something wich depends if you get good one or bad one.
I bet WWII pilots rarely had the time to sit down after a sortie and think "This was a bad one. I got banged big time"

Low and slow with 3 guys on you, and they all go down - there is nothing better.

I've had a few sorties were enemy planes flew in front of me no matter where I pointed my nose.  They make AH similar to golf... its the really good shots/sorties that keep you coming back

Had a great one with Maniac back in beta.

It all happened by luck, timing and by accident, but it was great.  6 cons, 2 of us, and we both made it home.

Good sorties eh?  I think my best sortie was a duel between wolf and I versus Frenchy and Monger.  Guns cold, 8k merge.  Frenchy and Monger in p47 and c205 respectively.  Wolf and I in p47 and p51.  The first fight turned into a long turning battle with Frenchy and myself going at it, Monger and Wolf down low circling.  Eventually I got above Frenchy, forcing him to dive.  Somehow he got a perfect shot on Wolf and roasted him with a quick burst.  So here I was, just me in a paper mache mustang against a 205 and a p47.  Somehow I got them both.    (I only wish I had filmed it.)

The next sortie though Monger and Frenchy pulled a brilliant weave at the merge that left me high with no one to shoot at, and Wolf low with 2 cons on him.  This time the TBIRDS weren't so lucky...

I really wish we could do that all over again...

My best sortie to date was in a FW190 back in the beta terrain, (ver .40 before there were rolling hills and airfields were in the top of hills?).  A huge lowdown furball ending up with seven kills for me and I got my bellybutton saved 3 times by fellow rooks, (one I never saw untill I watched the film).  To top it all off I ran out of fuel and the glide path ended short of the base.  Somehow I managed to pull up at the right instant and taxi-glided up the hill onto the runway. It would be nice to have that terrain available so I can watch it again.

Ah memories...

Geez.. I think I have to go back to my old WB days to remember a really good sortie.

Took up a 190A8 and found myself all alone at an enemy field, with about 15 angry cons below.  Suddenly a squaddie of mine comes barrelling in at about 5k, and all the low cons locked onto his tail.  He dragged straight while I bounced the end of the line.

In the space of about 30 seconds I shot down 10 target-fixated cons all strung out in a nice long line.

Not exactly a display of great air-to-air tactics, but it sure was fun to watch those burning zekes and Spitfires plummet to earth.

And then sometimes you have sorties that are neither, just very memorable.

Like the time I found 4 cons chasing Gie on the deck like ducks in a row. I was high, too high actually. I blew by all 4 of the cons so fast I didn't have time to aim (battling compression, blackout) LOL they scattered like quail.

I yelled at Gie to get out of there & zoomed up.

Look back 30 secs later and they are reforming again on Gie. Back around I go, back down, Gie see's me coming and sets up a sweet drag. Rattattt, 1 down, next one sees me coming & peels off. Wind screaming in my ears rattattt 2 down.  In furball now 2 x 2 Gie gets one, I finally finish off the last one. Turn & head for home, no ammo, whoops, no fuel, engine dead, dots in sight coming back.

I ditch & watch Gie fly away laughing so hard I almost die as the first con swoops down.

I still remember my first mulit-kill sortie.  It was a Sunday morning in DOS AW, the old ETO terrain, I was flying for Cland.....

Ahhhh...AWDOS....the good old days eh popeye

I once dove on a column of Alanders all lined up in their buffs headed to our carrier....one pass....eight kills in that single pass   I kept thinking to myself....when are these guys going to notice me?

Not going to happen here in AH...far better pilots from what I've noticed, and the use of RW cannot hurt either.

I also remember some fights with you popeye...good to see ya
