is it possible to edit typ files in photoshop?
« on: February 06, 2004, 02:03:03 PM »
would help a lot if i could export a type file and edit it in photoshop and compile it back into the terrain with the changes made.

that way I could preserve areas already customized and quickly edit new areas by cutting and pasting etc

is it currently possible?

rename typ file to raw.

Double click should open up in photoshop.
512
512
1 channel
8 bit

Image -> mode -> Index color
Image -> mode -> color Table
Change over from greyscale to system( windows ).

Start editing away.

To change back

Image -> mode -> color table
Greyscale
Save as Raw click okay to all the promots.
rename to typ and there you go.

Btw its upside down so flip it up to edit when finish flip it back.

i didnt get it to work with photoshop so I use a backwards method of importing the sections I want with ogres map maker into a 512 arena at max scale. then exporting the greyscale of that and putting it into photoshop and rescalling it. ussually when done this way the end result is more accurate because the exported bmp from the editor is higher resolution than the origional dem file due to its size and then i just cut n paste into the elevation file the area I want.

its backwards and tedious but it works well.

btw the only problem i found with the orge map maker is it will allways scale the terrian to 512x512 so that if you choose a small area it will export the terrian as a 512 x 152 map.

Then in photoshop you need to resize the image.

I think I had the same problem you described.  Here is my fix.

Open the DEM file (Open as -> RAW) 4800 6000 etc..

Change the DEM file to 8-bit/channel.  Photoshop won't edit the 16-bit/channel, that is how the DEM file is opened.

Select by color, the lowest area.  Fuzzy factor about 20, created a new layer and fill it will 100% gray.  I named it "water level."

Create an levels-adjustment layer between the background (DEM) and the "water level" layer.

This let me adjust the terrain gray levels without effecting the water.

When you're done, merge the layers and save the result.
