Effects:

1) reduction of the spring tension, which most of the users judge to be too stiff;
2) reduction of the plastic ring friction on the base, dramatically improving accuracy;
3) elimination of central clearance.

I love the stiffness of the stick. The throttle and stick feel like controls and not toys. I just bought the pair and the stick has all but eliminated nose bounce. I just hope the stiffness lasts and doesn't get soft after use. I got the the Best Buy 2 year normal wear gaurantee ($10) if it does

Thats what I did with my X-45. Another trick is to slip some wax paper between the bottom spring retainer and the seat.

Unfortunatly, no one I know of has come up with a fix for the crap view hats on the X-45. I'm on my third stick in less than a year and a half, and the hat switch is again going south again. I won't get another you can bet on that.

mine have lasted about 2 years each.

there must be somewhere to buy the view hat part, it would be easy to replace. on my first x36 i reversed the two top hats and doubled the life of the unit. but it was a royal pain in the ass.

any one know a source?

best bet with the X45 is to open 2 or 3 of them in the store and find one that doesn't stick around the center - QC isn't all that great and they come out with different tensions/stickiness on the center post

do this in a CompUSA so you can pay $10 more for the 12 month replacement plan. I get a new one about every 12 months for the cost of the new replacement plan ($10) this way.

Well this is my third X-45 in less than a year and a half. All have lost view hat functionallity within a few months. Looking at the forums on the Saitek site, it seems it's pretty common.

This one's going back to the store this weekend, and I won't be leaving with another.

It just seems so odd ( and dumb) they would put all that work into the rest of the stick and skimp on the hats. I had a Saitek Cyborg graphite ($19) stick. The view hat went out in a month. I was hoping the hats on the X45 would be sturdier. Well, it will be Best Buy's problem if it does.

this should start you off. it is setup for usb pedals and has the rotors as trim

I'd probably try one out if they made it about 15-20% bigger. I can't get my hand to fit inside that bail that goes around the front.

Thats another thing that makes one wonder about the designer's inteligence. There is absolutely no reason for that bail. It supports nothing, and it does get in the way.

Here's a clue for for their designers - remove the bail and put another button there. Then you could market the stick alone as an ambidextrous stick.

open up the profile editor and add them

on my main hat are all the views but LF and RF- they are on the oval hat on the throttle. the up on the oval hat provides the straight up view, used with 1 he views on the hat on the stick, I get the 45 up views of all of them. don't have anything programmed to look down - the 2nd hat on the jstick is zoom - on/off in/out
