Dick Dale is "the king of the surf guitar".  He pioneered a lot of loud guitar stuff, surf instrumentals with lots of reverb.  He did a lot of R&D for Leo Fender because anything Leo built, Dick Dale could break.  :)
Funny thing is that while he still kicks ass, he is most well known for something he recorded 40 years ago, Miserlou, the opening track in Pulp Fiction.

ahhh ok I know who you're talkig about. LOL The Pulp Fiction theme is the onlything I know of hearing by him!  I saw him on some interview once though.  Seemed like a fairly groovey dude.

 not the same thing ;)  There's something about a 20+ year old Fender that just can't be beat.  The way the fret boards ware down (the frets can be replaced) but even the worn down frets make for "easier" lead playing, for me at least.

He died in a helo crash after a concert.
Eric Clapton offered him the ride.

Just glad Eric did not get on that bird with him.

There's actually a Dick Dale/SRV connection.  They both were in the movie Back to the Beach playing the song "Pipeline."  They released the song on the latest greatest hits album "The Real Deal," i think that's what it's on but not positive.  Which leads me to another story....  :)

Dick and Stevie didn't get along at all.  When they cut Pipeline for the movie, Dick wanted to just use a synthesized track with their guitars on top.  Stevie being the purist he is told him no way, he wanted a live band.  They ended up recording it with a track, but then Stevie went back in the studio and added a live band behind it.  The things you can get away with when you're at the height of your fame, hehe.  I couldn't imagine being in a spot to tell Dick Dale to F off.
