Good Civil War games?
« on: February 22, 2004, 03:45:31 PM »
Looking for something RTS - more battlefield tactics heavy - not just a bunch of octagons on a map.  Troops, guns, etc.

Went and downloaded the old demo of Sid Miers Gettysburg - that sucked.  Couple of semi-promising games on the horizon, but nothing Im salivating over.

Anything Im missing?

Civil War Generals 2 is ok, I guess for tactics, but I can run it on Win95, so that SHOULD answer the rest of your questions.

Anyone remember North and South?  i loved that game.:)
"Willy's gone and made another,
Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."

I'd love to see a Civil War game along the lines of Medieval:Total War. Giving you a strategic overview, with a tactical battle sequence.

North and South rocked. Games these days are so untidy and badly thought out. That game was so neat and original.
War! Never been so much fun. War! Never been so much fun! Go to your brother, Kill him with your gun, Leave him lying in his uniform, Dying in the sun.

Too bad you don't like the hex-based games, Saur. I was going to suggest the excellent "Battleground" series from Talonsoft. "Battleground Gettysburg" being my favorite.

I agree on the Talonsoft series for hex-gamers. If attrition hadn't killed off my old cd's I'd still be happily playing them all, alas I'm down to Antietam.

There is another independant group making an American Civil War genre game, check out http://www.madminutegames.com and see what they have been up to. It looks promising but needs alot of work from the videos they have available. They hope to have it out sometime this year.

Another idea was also mentioned if you are into that period is reenacting. I did that for many years while in Georgia and now am about to get back into it with a new unit here in Maryland. Why just play the games when you can get a flavor and feel of the (somewhat) real thing?

Any gamers out there remember the Avalon Hill Gettysburg board-game? Talk about a paperwork nightmare!
