IMO there are some great guitars listed here...

but if you want the most 'flexible' in terms of variety of tone and applicable styles, I think a Strat or Paul is the way to go.

when I only had one guitar it was a Jeff Beck strat with switchable pickups (single/double coil).  It excells at reproducing many different tones/styles.

The other guitar player in my band plays an old cherry-sunburst paul.. a great combination if you ask me.. strat/paul

oh and Marshall, Fender and Line6 (for studio work) amps

I work on a non-profit board with the manager of the Fender factory in Corona, CA.

Like I said before, during a tour I saw a whole department that did nothing but build complete perfect reproductions of old models. These included "factory installed wear and tear" if the customer wanted it.  They even have special distributors that make fabric wrapped wires to maintain authenticity.

And most of the amps they built still have tubes. Sound better.

The Final Finish department is made up exclusively of musicians. Their job is to take the product and "make it a musical instrument." Very cool to stand there and hear 30 people playing riffs and such.

Fender... made in the USA.
fender is also made in mexico and japan too,,,,,the mexican and japan models sell for about 400 too 600 new,,i work in a music store my self,,sell everything jacksons and deal with old gibson and fenders,,are store wont touch any of the new fender stuff besides amps

you know what makes gibson so spendy? its the paint jobs and wood,,they personaly grow there own wood i heard from a gibson dealer,,the necks are one solid peace of wood,,you will notice most othere guitar necks are 2 and 3 peices of wood,,the paint job is spendy,,because it aint that plastic crap they put on most guitars,,the finish makes the guitar worth a ton,,lol, even the new gibsons bring big bucks,,very good guitars,,but very heavy,,if you want a light gibson best to try a gibson sg:) angus special,,lol

fender, gibson, jackson,<~~all make very high quality guitars,,but!! they all so make low budget cheap guitars,,best exsample i ever seen,,,take apart a brand new fender usa,,then take apart a mexican made strat,,,you will be amazed by how small the electronics and pots are inside the mexican made strat,,just plain cheap,,,the usa made fender will have big oversides electronics,,heavier made and better made,,you get what you pay for,,they all may say gibson or fender,,but unless its usa made, your getting a cheap copy

how much you wanting for your 65 strat and do you have pics to post? good guitars:)

No way!  I have kept it in meticulous shape over the years.  Refinished it a couple of years ago.  Looks brand new and still has that light/quick action.

When I bought it, I was looking at a Strat.  The Music Store owner knew me, as I had played in his son's band for a while.  He saw me and said, "I have seen you play,..come here".
He puts that Mustang in my hands and I fell in love.  Best electric guitar I have ever owned.

Regarding an inexpensive Gibson Les Paul, which would likely mean a Studio model, make sure you are really happy with its sound, playability, and contruction.   I had been looking to purchase a second Les Paul for more than 5 years and found the Studio models lacking in one or more of these areas.  Poor fret work, inconsistant finish, and internal rattles and buzzes.  Many Epiphones had better quality but they used very inexpenive laminated tonewoods.  Nowadays, Epiphone has their "Elite" line with contruction nearly the equal of the more expensive Gibson models.  You'll pay about the same for a Gibson Studio but get a better guitar.

I ended up purchasing a 2002 Gibson Les Paul Std, which is THE finest guitar I have ever played.  As a point of reference, I own a Taylor 810, have had several custom built guitars done, and used to own an '87 Paul Reed Smith Custom 24.  It just may be the last guitar I'll ever buy.
